Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

Crankshaft Pulley

Removal

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.

3. Remove the cooling fan stator. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater.

Vehicles with dual generator

4. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and disconnect the dual generator accessory drive belt from the dual generator pulley.

5. Remove the 3 bolts and the dual generator pulley.

All vehicles

6. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and disconnect the accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.

7. Check the crankshaft vibration damper runout.
- Remove the paint from the face of the crankshaft vibration damper at 4 points 90 degrees apart.

- Attach the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture to the cylinder block. Position the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture on one of the unpainted surfaces.

- Using a suitable tool, pry the crankshaft forward. Zero the Dial Indicator.

- NOTE: Pry the crankshaft forward only to eliminate possible error caused by crankshaft end play.

Rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees. Pry the crankshaft forward. Record the measurement. Repeat at each unpainted surface.

- If the runout exceeds specification, install a new crankshaft vibration damper.

8. WARNING: Support the vibration damper during mounting bolt removal. The damper can slide off the nose of the crankshaft. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Remove the 4 bolts and the crankshaft pulley.
- Discard the bolts.

Installation

All vehicles

1. NOTICE: To prevent engine damage, always install 4 new bolts when installing the vibration damper.

NOTE: Do not use anti-seize compounds, grease or any lubricants. Lubricants have an adverse effect on the torque results.

Position the crankshaft pulley and install 4 new bolts in 2 stages, in the sequence shown.

- Stage 1: Tighten to 68 Nm (50 lb-ft).

- Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

2. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt onto the crankshaft pulley.

Vehicles with dual generator

3. Install the dual generator pulley and the 3 bolts.
- Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

4. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and install the dual generator accessory drive belt onto the dual generator pulley.

All vehicles

5. Install the cooling fan stator. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater.

6. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
