Pinpoint Test AB: The Stability/Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The stability/traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle stability/traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the stability/traction control data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IC monitors the stability/traction control message and when the ABS module detects a stability/traction control concern, the IC illuminates the stability/traction control indicator. If the stability/traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0121 (non-hybrid) or U0129 (hybrid) in continuous memory and defaults the stability/traction control indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Stability/traction control system concern
- A MyKey(TM) programmed key is in use
- ABS module
- IC
PINPOINT TEST AB: THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
NOTE: When a MyKey(TM) programmed key is in use and the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the traction control system cannot be disabled and the traction control indicator does not turn on when the traction control disable button is pressed. The traction control indicator still functions normally to indicate a traction control system fault and a traction control active event.
-------------------------------------------------
AB1 CHECK FOR THE KEY TYPE
- Check if the key is a MyKey(TM) programmed key or administrator key. Refer to Antitheft and Alarm Systems.
- Is the key an administrator key?
Yes
GO to AB2.
No
If the MyKey(TM) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the system is normal. The traction control system cannot be disabled when the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on.
If the MyKey(TM) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is not configured always on, GO to AB2.
-------------------------------------------------
AB2 CHECK THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR OPERATION USING THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL DISABLE SWITCH
- Ignition ON.
- Press the stability/traction control disable switch one time to disable the stability/traction control system then press the stability/traction control switch again while monitoring the stability/traction control indicator.
- Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate with the first switch press and turn off with the second switch press?
Yes
If the stability/traction control indicator does not operate while in traction active mode, INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the stability/traction control indicator operates in traction active mode, the system is operating normally at this time.
No
GO to AB3.
-------------------------------------------------
AB3 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger .
- Select the IC stability/traction control active indicator (ACTIVELMP) active command. Command the stability/traction control active indicator on and off. Observe the stability/traction control indicator.
- Does the stability/traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to AB4.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
AB4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any ABS module DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.
No
GO to AB5.
-------------------------------------------------
AB5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 (non-hybrid) or DTC U1029 (hybrid) recorded?
Yes
GO to AB6.
No
INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
AB6 CARRY OUT THE IC SELF-TEST
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC Self-Test .
- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IC self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 or DTC U0129 present?
Yes
For DTC U0121, GO to Pinpoint Test AY. Pinpoint Tests AY: DTC U0121
For DTC U0129, GO to Pinpoint Test AZ. Pinpoint Tests AZ: DTC U0129
No
VERIFY the stability/traction control indicator is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have resulted from an intermittent network concern.
