Pinpoint Test AE: The Wait To Start Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The wait to start data is transmitted to the Instrument Cluster (IC) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus from the PCM. The wait to start indicator illuminates when the key is in the ON position with the engine off (KOEO) indicating that the glow plugs are heating.
If the wait to start data is missing for less than 5 seconds, the wait to start indicator remains in the last indication mode (on or off). If the wait to start data is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the wait to start indicator off.
NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
- DTC B2658 (Wait To Start Warning Indicator Circuit Open) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets if the IC detects an internal open in the wait to start indicator lamp circuitry or bulb. This DTC can only be detected when the lamp is commanded on. Once the IC sets the fault, the IC sends a message to the PCM to command the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) indicator on.
NOTE: DTC B2658 can set in the IC and P0381 can set in the PCM after exiting an IC dealer test mode session.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM
- IC
PINPOINT TEST AE: THE WAIT TO START INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
AE1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC B2658, GO to AE2.
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test BD. Pinpoint Tests BD: DTC U0100
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to AE3.
-------------------------------------------------
AE2 CLEAR THE DTCs AND REPEAT THE SELF-TEST
NOTE: DTC B2658 can set in the IC and DTC P0381 can set in the PCM after exiting a IC dealer test mode session.
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC Self-Test .
- Clear the DTCs and repeat the IC self-test.
- Is DTC B2658 present?
Yes
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set when exiting a previous dealer test mode session.
-------------------------------------------------
AE3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to AE4.
-------------------------------------------------
AE4 CARRY OUT THE IC WARNING LAMPS COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger .
- Select the IC all lamps (ALL_LAMP) active command. Command all the indicators on and off. Observe the wait to start indicator.
- Does the wait to start indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
