Pinpoint Test J: One Turn Signal/Hazard Lamp Is Inoperative/Always On

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 90, Turn Signal/Stop/Hazard Lamps for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

When the multifunction switch is placed in the LH or RH TURN position, the multifunction switch routes the voltage to the LH or RH front turn lamp. The multifunction switch also routes the voltage to the LH or RH rear lamps through the existing stoplamp circuitry.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Multifunction switch

PINPOINT TEST J: ONE TURN SIGNAL/HAZARD LAMP IS INOPERATIVE/ALWAYS ON

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery.

-------------------------------------------------
J1 CHECK THE STOPLAMPS

- Ignition OFF.
- Apply and release the brake pedal while observing the rear lamps.
- Do the stoplamps operate correctly?

Yes
GO to J2.

No
REFER to Stoplamps. Testing and Inspection

-------------------------------------------------
J2 DETERMINE IF THE LAMP IS INOPERATIVE OR ALWAYS ON

- Ignition ON.
- Observe the turn lamp in question.
- Is the lamp in question always on?

Yes
GO to J3.

No
GO to J4.

-------------------------------------------------
J3 CHECK THE TURN SIGNAL SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
- Ignition ON.
- Does the turn lamp continue to illuminate?

Yes
If the LH front turn lamp is always on, REPAIR circuit CLS39 (VT/WH) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

If the RH front turn lamp is always on, REPAIR circuit CLS41 (GY/YE) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
J4 CHECK THE TURN LAMP GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Disconnect: Inoperative Turn Lamp.
- Measure the resistance between the LH turn lamp C1023-1, circuit GD121 (BK/YE), harness side and ground; or between the RH turn lamp C1043-1, circuit GD123 (BK/GY), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to J5.

No
REPAIR circuit GD121 (BK/YE) (LH turn lamp) or circuit GD123 (BK/GY) (RH turn lamp) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
J5 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch.
- Carry out the multifunction switch component test.

- Is the multifunction switch OK?

Yes
If the LH turn lamp is inoperative, REPAIR circuit CLS39 (VT/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

If the RH turn lamp is inoperative, REPAIR circuit CLS41 (GY/YE) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
