Transmission

Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.

2. Disconnect the battery.

3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) air intake duct assembly. For additional information, refer to Intake Air Distribution and Filtering Intake Air System Components - Exploded View.

4. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.

5. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to Interior Trim and Ornamentation Service and Repair.

6. NOTE: If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.

Loosen the transmission fluid pan bolts and allow the transmission fluid to drain. After the transmission fluid is drained, remove the bolts and transmission fluid pan.

7. NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable. Clean and inspect for damage; if not damaged, the transmission fluid pan gasket should be reused.

Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket.

1. Position the transmission fluid pan and gasket.

2. Install the transmission fluid pan bolts.
- Tighten to 14 Nm (124 lb-in).

8. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube.
- Remove the bolt and nut.

9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.

10. Remove the torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts. Position the fuel and electrical harness brackets aside.

11. NOTE: The case fittings must be held in place to prevent them from moving.

Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Plug all fittings and position the transmission fluid cooler tubes aside.

12. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Driveshaft Removal and Replacement.

13. Remove the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket.

1. Disconnect the clip.

2. Remove the bolts.

14. Remove the torque converter access plug.

15. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Starting System Service and Repair.

16. If so equipped, remove the fasteners and the front A/C deflector assembly.

17. Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.

18. Remove the flexplate inspection plate.

1. Remove the bolts.

2. Remove the flexplate inspection plate.

3. Remove the bolt.

19. Disconnect the Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) harness connectors.

20. Remove the crossmember. For additional information, refer to Full Frame and Body Mounting Crossmember - Exploded View.

21. Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.

22. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

- NOTICE: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the right side heat shield, as well as other obstructions while lowering the transmission, or damage may occur.

Separate and back the transmission away from the engine, positioning the extension housing above the exhaust crossover pipe.

23. Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.

24. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the transmission vehicle wire harness from the transmission.

1. Disconnect the Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector.

2. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector.

3. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor connector and remove the transmission vehicle wire harness from the transmission.

25. Install the Torque Converter Retainer.

- WARNING: Secure the torque converter in the transmission during removal or installation. The torque converter is heavy and may result in injury if it falls out of the transmission. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTICE: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the engine, or damage may occur.

Carefully tilt the front of the transmission downward.

- NOTICE: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the exhaust crossover pipe, or damage may occur.

Lower the transmission enough to clear the engine. Then, carefully pull the jack with the transmission toward the front of the vehicle, lowering the transmission as required until it is clear of the exhaust crossover pipe.

- Tilt the front of the transmission upward until level.

- Remove the transmission with the jack from under the vehicle.

26. If the transmission is being disassembled to install new parts, or if a new or remanufactured transmission is being installed, the transmission fluid cooler, the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler (if equipped) and the transmission fluid cooler tubes must be cleaned and backflushed to keep contaminants from entering the transmission. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning.
