Pinpoint Test AI: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the wrench message center warning indicator data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (part of the PCM) for the transmission status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the ETC system or the transmission, the PCM provides the IPC with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator.

If the ETC or transmission data is missing for less than 5 seconds from the PCM or TCM, the IPC defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good message received.

If the ETC message is missing or invalid for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator ON.

If the transmission status message is missing or invalid for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0101:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator ON.

NOTE: If U0100:00 is set in the IPC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC concern
- Transmission concern
- IPC

PINPOINT TEST AI: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

-------------------------------------------------
AI1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0100:00 or DTC U0101:00 recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AU. Pinpoint Tests AU: DTC U0100:00

For DTC U0101:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AV. Pinpoint Tests AV: DTC U0101:00

No
GO to AI2.

-------------------------------------------------
AI2 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE ENGINE OVER-TEMPERATURE MESSAGE CENTER INDICATOR

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: In-Line C219 .
- Ignition ON.

- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center indicators rotate through each of the warnings. Allow the displays to rotate through each display while determining whether the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and over-temperature message center indicators are active.

- Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IPC with the PCM connected and disconnected.
- Does the engine over-temperature message center warning indicator remain off when the PCM is connected and become active with the PCM disconnected?

Yes
GO to AI3.

No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
AI3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM AND TCM KOEO SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM and TCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any ETC DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems.

No
For transmission DTCs, REFER to Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - 4R70E/4R75E or Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - TorqShift(R) [1][2]Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions.
