Pinpoint Test AD: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The powertrain malfunction (wrench) telltale can be turned on by one of four modules. The PCM provides the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status (hybrid) and transaxle status (non-hybrid), the Transmission Control Module (TCM) provides the transaxle status (hybrid), the 4X4 control module provides the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system status (non-hybrid) and the Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery (BCM-HVTB) (hybrid) provides the traction battery system status to the Instrument Cluster (IC). Each module monitors the powertrain for their respective function(s) and provides the IC (Instrument Cluster) with the operating status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in any of the monitored systems, the PCM, TCM (Transmission Control Module), 4X4 control module or BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) provide the IC (Instrument Cluster) with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.

If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC (Instrument Cluster) other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.

If the transaxle status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0101 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

If the traction battery status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0111 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

If the 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) system status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0114 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) concern

- Transaxle concern

- Traction battery concern

- 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) concern

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AD : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

AD1 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator (ETC_IND) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator on and off. Observe the indicator.

Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to AD2.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

AD2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) AND TCM (Transmission Control Module) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM and TCM (Transmission Control Module) (hybrid) DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and TCM (Transmission Control Module) self-test.

Are any PCM or TCM (Transmission Control Module) DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information or Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems.

No
For hybrid, GO to AD4.

Non-hybrid with 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive), GO to AD3.

Non-hybrid without 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive), GO to AD5.

AD3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded 4X4 control module DTCs from the self-test.

Are any 4X4 control module DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.

No
GO to AD5.

AD4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.

Are any BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.

No
GO to AD5.

AD5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test AV Pinpoint Test AV: DTC U0100.

For DTC U0101, GO to Pinpoint Test AW Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0101.

For DTC U0111, GO to Pinpoint Test AX Pinpoint Test AX: DTC U0111.

For DTC B1318, GO to Pinpoint Test AT to diagnose the charging system first Pinpoint Test AT: DTC B1318. If DTC U0114 returns, REFER to Information Bus to diagnose no communication with the 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) control module.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
