Timing Cover: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE





1. Disconnect both the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Powertrain Management.
2. Remove the upper fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Upper) in Cooling System.
3. Remove the drive belt from the drive pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
4. Remove the right accessory bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Right Side)

IMPORTANT: When performing this service procedure, it is not necessary to evacuate the A/C system. Just move the A/C compressor to the side and secure out of the way.

5. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the left accessory bracket.
6. Remove the left accessory bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Left Side).
7. Remove the lower fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Lower) in Cooling System.
8. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
9. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement (Diesel) in Cooling System.
10. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) Replacement in Powertrain Managements.





11. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the camshaft.
12. Remove the mounting bolts for the fuel injection pump. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Replacement in Powertrain Managements.
13. Remove the fuel line clips from the studs.





14. Remove the bolts from the engine front cover to the oil pan.





15. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
16. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 22102 Seal Installer





1. Use the J 22102 to install a new crankshaft front cover oil seal.





2. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 inch) bead of anaerobic sealant GM P/N 1052357 to the engine front cover.
3. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 inch) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12345739 to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates with oil pan.





4. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.





NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the engine front cover mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts and studs to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the fuel injection pump mounting bolts.
7. Install the fuel injection pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Replacement in Powertrain Managements.





8. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear to the fuel injection pump.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
10. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement (Diesel) in Cooling System.

IMPORTANT: Check the marks on the fuel line clips made during removal. Ensure that the fuel line clips are re-installed on the proper studs.

11. Install the fuel return line clips.
12. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) Replacement in Powertrain Managements.
13. Install the right accessory bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Right Side).
14. Install the left accessory bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Left Side).
15. Install the A/C compressor to the left accessory bracket.





16. Install the lower fan shrouds to the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Lower) in Cooling System.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Install the drive belt on the drive pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
19. Install the upper fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement (Upper) in Cooling System.
20. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Powertrain Management.
21. Reset the TDC off set timing procedure. Refer to TDC Offset Adjustment.
