DTC Descriptors
DTC C0196 00
- Yaw Rate Circuit
Diagnostic Fault Information
Circuit/System Description
The vehicle stability enhancement system is activated by the electronic brake control module (EBCM) calculating the desired yaw rate and comparing it to the actual yaw rate input. The Yaw/Lateral sensor communicates to the EBCM on a dedicated CAN bus. The desired yaw rate is calculated from measured steering wheel position, vehicle speed, and lateral acceleration. The difference between the desired yaw rate and actual yaw rate is the yaw rate error, which is a measurement of over-steer or under-steer. If the yaw rate error becomes too large, the EBCM will attempt to correct the vehicle's yaw motion by applying differential braking to the wheels.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* The ignition switch is in the ON position.
* The ignition voltage is greater than 9.5 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
* The yaw/lateral combination sensor reports an internal failure.
* The yaw/lateral combination sensor learns a wrong offset value.
* Incorrectly mounted yaw/lateral sensor.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
One or more of the following actions may occur:
* Vehicle stability enhancement system is disabled.
* A driver information center message and/or a warning indicator may be displayed.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
* The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 50 consecutive drive cycles.
Diagnostic Aids
Possible causes of this DTC are as follows:
* Inspect the mounting of the Yaw sensor to ensure proper orientation and installation of the sensor.
* On a level surface, read the Yaw sensor offset value to ensure a value within the proper range.

Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Yaw Rate/Lateral Accelerometer sensor.
2. Test for less than 1 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test for an open/high resistance in the low reference circuit.
3. Ignition ON, test for ignition voltage between the ignition circuit terminal 4 and the low reference circuit terminal 1.
• If not the specified value, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
4. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
5. Test for infinite resistance between the low reference circuit terminal 29 and ground.
• If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground.
6. Ignition ON, test for 0 V between the communication circuit terminal 18 and ground at the EBCM harness connector.
• If greater than the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to voltage.
7. Test for 0 V between the communication circuit terminal 19 and ground.
• If greater than the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to voltage.
8. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the communication circuit terminal 18 and ground.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to ground.
9. Test for infinite resistance between the communication circuit terminal 19 and ground.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to ground.
10. Test for less than 1 ohm between the communication circuit terminals 18 and terminal 3.
• If greater than the specified range, test the communication circuit for an open/high resistance.
11. Test for less than 1 ohm between the communication circuit terminals 19 and terminal 2.
• If greater than the specified range, test the communication circuit for an open/high resistance.
12. Test for infinite resistance between the communication circuit 18 and the communication circuit 19.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuits for a short together.
13. If all circuits test normal, replace the Yaw Rate/Lateral sensor.
