Parking Brake Shoe Replacement (J90, J95, J96)
Removal Procedure
Warning:
Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.
Note:
Left side park brake assembly shown. Right side park brake assembly is inverted.
1. Release the park brake.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
4. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J90, J96) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J90, J96)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J95) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J95).
5. Remove the rear axle hub. Refer to Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement.
6. Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster spring (1).
7. Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster (1).
8. Remove the parking brake shoe hold down cups (1) and springs (2) by compressing the springs and rotating the cups 1/4 turn to disengage the cups from the hold down spring pins.
9. Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring pins (1).
10. Grasp the parking brake shoes (1) and pull out and upward to release the parking brake shoes from the parking brake shoe actuator.
11. Pull the parking brake shoe over the parking brake shoe actuator and remove the parking brake shoes as an assembly.
Note:
Notice the position of the outer and inner return spings.
12. Remove the inner parking brake shoe return spring (1).
13. Remove the outer parking brake shoe return spring (2).
14. Clean the parking brake shoe contact surfaces on the rear brake shield.
Installation Procedure
1. Apply high temperature brake lubricant to the parking brake shoe contact surfaces.

* Anchor contact (2)
* Actuator link contact (3)
Note:
The outer parking brake shoe return spring must be installed closest to the parking brake actuator.
2. Install the inner parking brake shoe return spring (1).
3. Install the outer parking brake shoe return spring (2).
4. Ensure the outer parking brake shoe return spring (1) is installed closest to the parking brake actuator.
5. Position the parking brake shoe assembly to the rear brake shield.
6. Grasp the parking brake shoes (1) and pull the parking brake shoes over the parking brake backing plate anchor.
7. Seat the parking brake shoes in the parking brake actuator (1).
8. Install the parking brake shoe hold down spring pins (1).
9. Install the parking brake shoe hold down cups (1) and springs (2).
10. Disassemble and clean the parking brake shoe adjuster assembly threads.
11. Apply high temperature brake lubricant to the threads of the parking brake shoe adjuster.
12. Install the parking brake shoe adjuster (1).
13. Install the parking brake shoe adjuster spring (1).
14. Install the rear axle hub. Refer to Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement.
15. Adjust the parking brake. 16. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J90, J96) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J90, J96)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J95) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J95).
17. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
