IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS!
If PROM is installed backwards, and ignition turned "On", it will be destroyed.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
- Remove computer from vehicle as described under ECM in this section.
- Remove access cover, Note position of PROM unit in computer. PROM's are not interchangeable. Replacement PROM's must be installed in the same position and direction as defective PROM.
- Grasp PROM carrier with PROM removal tool.
. - Rock carrier side-to-side while applying a firm upward force, then remove PROM and carrier. Remove PROM from carrier. Inspect replacement PROM to ensure the part number is the same as the removed PROM.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
- Install replacement PROM in carrier.
- Position PROM and carrier assembly over PROM socket and press down firmly on top of carrier. Press down on carrier and ensure it seats squarely. Do not press on PROM. Press on carrier only.
- Replace access cover, then install computer in vehicle.
- Start engine, enter self-diagnosis and check for CODE 51. If CODE 51 does not display, PROM is installed correctly. If CODE 51 is displayed, PROM is installed incorrectly and installation procedure must be repeated. If PROM is installed backwards, and ignition turned "On", it will be destroyed.
