Timing Chain
This is a "Trustmark Authoring Standards (TAS) Repair Procedure"
- TAS style procedures can be identified by steps that have no accompanying step text and the magenta color of the electrical connectors and fasteners such as nuts, bolts, clamps or clips.
- TAS removal and installation procedures use a sequence of color illustrations to indicate the order to be followed when removing/disassembling or installing/assembling a component.
- Many of the TAS procedures will have the installation information within the removal steps.
- The TAS color illustrations use a variety of symbols to indicate important details of the procedures. It is important to understand these symbols in order to properly used the TAS procedures.

Removal

CAUTION: Extreme cleanliness must be exercised when handling these components.

NOTE:
Make sure the timing chain free length is on the tensioner run of the chain before releasing the tensioner locking device.

WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.
1 Raise and support the vehicle.
2 Remove the cover and disconnect the battery ground cable.

3 Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.

4 Remove the RH engine mount.

5 Remove the timing cover.
For additional information, refer to Timing Cover Service and Repair




6 Position and lock the crankshaft.

To depress the chain tensioner piston and lock it in position with a 2mm, or less, diameter pin.
Apply an even pressure in a counter clockwise direction.
Lift the piston ratchet clip.
Install a pin with 2mm, or less, diameter.





CAUTION: Mark the components to aid installation.

CAUTION: Extreme cleanliness must be exercised when handling this component.
7 Remove the timing chain tensioner.




8 Remove and discard the camshaft bore plugs.




9 Install the camshaft alignment special tool.

10 Using the special tool, lock the camshaft drive sprockets.

11 Remove and discard the 2 camshaft sprockets bolts





12 Remove the sprockets and the chain.

Installation
1 Install the chain and the sprockets.

CAUTION: Do not tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts at this stage.

CAUTION: Make sure that new bolts are installed.
2 Install the sprocket retaining Torx bolts to the camshafts.

CAUTION: Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of foreign material.

CAUTION: Extreme cleanliness must be exercised when handling these components.
3 Install the timing chain tensioner.
Torque to: 10 Nm
4 Release the chain tensioner
5 Using the special tool, lock the camshaft drive sprockets.

6 Tighten the exhaust camshaft drive sprocket.
Step 1: 75 Nm

Step 2: 90 degree
7 Tighten the inlet camshaft drive sprocket.
Torque to: 110 Nm
8 Remove the camshaft alignment special tool.

CAUTION: Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of foreign material.

CAUTION: The plugs must be installed dry.
9 Install new camshaft bore plugs.

10 Remove the crankshaft locking tool.

11 Install the crankshaft front oil seal.

12 Install the timing cover.

13 Install the RH engine mount.

14 Connect the battery ground cable and install the cover.
