Removal
WARNING: Persons working on the supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully trained and have been issued with the safety guidelines.
WARNING: Allow a period of 10 minutes to elapse after disconnecting the battery before undertaking any work on the SRS.
WARNING: The SRS electrical connectors are unique. DO NOT force, or attempt to connect electrical connectors to the wrong sockets.
WARNING: The correct procedures must always be used when working on SRS components.
WARNING: It is imperative that before any work is undertaken on the SRS system, the appropriate information is read thoroughly.
WARNING: Always disconnect both battery cables before beginning work on the SRS system. Disconnect the ground cable first. Never reverse connect the battery.
WARNING: Take extra care when handling SRS components.
NOTE:
If the SRS component is to be replaced, the bar code of the new unit must be recorded.
1 Make the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) safe. For additional information, refer to Standard Workshop Practices Standard Workshop Practices
2 Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Specifications Battery and Charging System
3 Release the 2 clips from the driver air bag module using a rod at least 50 mm (2 inches.) long and not exceeding 3 mm (1/8 inch.) diameter. Install the rod through each access hole in the steering wheel control switches at right angles to the steering column. Locate the secondary hole and carefully push on the rod until the clip is released.
4 Remove the driver air bag module.
- Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.

NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
Remove the speed control switch and steering wheel audio controls.
- Remove the 4 screws.
- Disconnect the 5 electrical connectors from the speed control switch and steering wheel audio controls.
Installation
1 Install the speed control switch and steering wheel audio controls.
- Connect the 5 electrical connectors to the speed control switch and steering wheel audio controls.
- Install the 4 screws and tighten to 3 Nm (2 lb.ft).

NOTE:
If the SRS component is to be replaced, the bar code of the new unit must be recorded.
Position the driver air bag module and connect the 3 electrical connectors.
3 Locate the driver air bag module and carefully push to secure the clips.
