Repair Instruction - Initialization
INTRODUCTION: REPAIR INSTRUCTION:
INITIALIZATION
NOTE: When disconnecting the cable from negative (-) battery terminal, initialize the following system(s) after the terminal is reconnected.
- The initialization procedures are show below the table.
1. PERFORM INITIALIZATION (SFI SYSTEM)
(a) Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels.
(b) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(c) Put the engine in the inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.
(d) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
(e) Warm up the engine with the A/C switch off until the engine coolant temperature becomes 83°C (181°F) or more.
(f) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / State of Change.
(g) Move the shift lever to the N position, set the A/C switch to MAX cool or turn on the front defroster, and leave the vehicle until the State of Change value is below 40%.
HINT: If the State of Change is substantially below 40%, the auxiliary battery may go dead. Therefore, do not allow the SOC to reach substantially below 40%.
(h) Move the shift lever to the P position and turn the ignition switch off.
(i) Disconnect the negative terminal from the auxiliary battery and leave it for 1 minute or more.
(j) Reconnect the negative terminal to the auxiliary battery and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
(k) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
(l) Check that the engine coolant temperature is 83°C (181°F) or more.
HINT: If the engine coolant temperature is below 83°C (181°F), start the engine by depressing the accelerator pedal with the shift lever in the P position to increase the engine coolant temperature.
(m) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Calculate Load.
(n) Move the shift lever to the D position while depressing the brake pedal with the left foot.
(o) Depress the accelerator pedal with the right foot while firmly depressing the brake pedal with the left foot, and maintain an engine load value of 45% or more (60 to 70% of full acceleration) for approximately 30 seconds.
NOTE: Do not perform this step for 40 seconds or more.
(p) Shift the shift lever to the P position. Turn the ignition switch off and then wait for 5 seconds before putting the vehicle into the READY-on state again.
(q) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / ISC Leaning.
(r) Check that the air conditioner is off. Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and release it when the engine starts.
(s) Check that Complete is displayed on Techstream screen.
HINT:
- If ISC Leaning is not completed within 1 minute, repeat steps (o) through (r).
- The engine will usually stop when ISC Leaning is completed. However, the engine will not stop even when ISC Leaning is completed in such cases when the charge level of the auxiliary battery is decreased.
2. AFS ECU INITIALIZATION (LIGHTING SYSTEM)
NOTE: Steering neutral point automatic correction (AFS ECU INITIALIZATION) is necessary under the following condition.
- Disconnecting the battery.
- Replacing the steering sensor or AFS ECU.
(a) Run the vehicle on the place where few curve or traffic congestion exist at least 100 m at the speed between 20 km/h (12 mph) and 80 km/h (48 mph).
HINT:
- Steering neutral point correction begins automatically when turn the ignition switch on.
- Steering neutral point correction is automatically performed by vehicle running. AFS operation is prohibited when steering neutral point automatic correction is not performed or during automatic correction.
- AFS operation restarts when steering neutral point automatic correction is completed normally.
3. AFS ECU RE-INITIALIZATION (WHEN NOT USING TECHSTREAM) (LIGHTING SYSTEM)
NOTE: This operation manually initializes the steering sensor when AFS operation is not normal due to abnormal automatic correction after completion of AFS INITIALIZATION.
HINT:
- If it is necessary to initialize the steering sensor when not disconnecting the battery, it is also possible to re-set the signal from the steering sensor.
- When the centering point memorized in the steering sensor differs from the normal point, the AFS ECU malfunctions. In the case, re-initialize it.
- If the operation does not finishes within a specified time period, the system goes off the AFS indicator light and starts steering neutral point automatic correction.
1. SHIFT TO INITIALIZATION
(a) Engine is running and shift range is in the P position.
(b) Press the AFS OFF switch eight times at approximately one-second interval (once for ON and once more for OFF, i.e. 4 times ON and 4 times OFF).
HINT:
- The AFS OFF indicator light starts to blink twice per second.
- Initialization can be started when the AFS OFF switch is either in the "ON" or "OFF" position.
- When the AFS OFF switch is pressed eight times, it will return to its original state.

2. INITIALIZATION OF AFS ECU
(a) Turn the steering wheel to adjust the tires so that they point straight ahead.
(b) Do not change the steering wheel position. Press the AFS OFF switch twice (once ON and once OFF).
HINT:
- The AFS OFF indicator light stays lit for two seconds.
- When the AFS OFF switch is pressed twice, it will return to its original state.
(c) Do not change the steering wheel position and press the AFS OFF switch twice within 3 to 10 seconds.
HINT:
- The AFS OFF indicator light stays lit for two seconds.
- When the AFS OFF switch is pressed twice, it will return to its original state.
(d) Do not change the steering wheel position and press the AFS OFF switch twice again within 3 to 10 seconds.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK COMPLETION OF AFS ECU INITIALIZATION
(a) When the initialization of the steering sensor signal is completed normally, the AFS OFF indicator light goes off, comes on, or blinks depending on the specific condition 3 second after the indicator light goes off.
Result:
HINT:
- Failure to complete initialization. Proceed to step 2 within 10 seconds.
- If 10 seconds elapse, the system starts steering neutral point automatic correction.

4. AFS ECU RE-INITIALIZATION (WHEN USING TECHSTREAM) (LIGHTING SYSTEM)
NOTE: This operation manually initializes the steering sensor when AFS operation is not normal due to abnormal automatic correction after completion of AFS INITIALIZATION.
HINT:
- If it is necessary to initialize the steering sensor when not disconnecting the battery, it is also possible to re-set the signal from the steering sensor.
- When the centering point memorized in the steering sensor differs from the normal point, the AFS ECU malfunctions. In the case, re-initialize it.
- If the operation does not finish within a specified time period, the system goes off the AFS indicator light and starts steering neutral point automatic correction.
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Select "STEER SENS INIT" on "DIAGNOSTICS MENU AFS" display.
(d) Turn the steering wheel with the engine starting until the tires face straight ahead, and press "ENTER".
(e) Check "CONFIRM" display and press "YES".
NOTE: Do not turn the steering wheel while initializing and keep the tires facing straight ahead.
(f) Check the display for completion of the operation.
HINT: If the operation above cannot be completed after several attempts, a malfunction in the steering sensor circuit is suspected.
5. BACK DOOR LOCK (POWER DOOR LOCK CONTROL SYSTEM) (BACK DOOR CLOSER SYSTEM) (POWER BACK DOOR SYSTEM) (ELECTRICAL BACK DOOR OUTSIDE HANDLE SYSTEM)
(a) When the battery is reconnected:
If the back door is locked and therefore cannot be opened, it is necessary to unlock the back door using the door control switch or transmitter switch.
(b) When the back door lock is replaced:
The power back door ECU cannot receive a switch signal from the lock. This may cause the power back door system to enter fail-safe mode and DTC B2215 to set, as well as to make the system disabled. When the lock is replaced, be sure to perform the following: first properly connect the lock, second clear the DTC from memory using Techstream and finally recheck that no DTC is output.
6. RESET (INITIALIZE) POWER WINDOW REGULATOR MOTOR (POWER WINDOW CONTROL SYSTEM)
NOTICE:
- Resetting the power window motor (initializing the pulse sensor) is necessary when the battery terminal is disconnected; when the power window regulator master switch, power window regulator switch, wire harness, power window regulator and power window motor are replaced or removed/installed; or when the PWR fuse, RR DOOR LH fuse, RR DOOR RH and ECU-B fuse are replaced. AUTO operation function, jam protection function and remote operation function via the power window regulator master switch do not operate without resetting.
- Be sure to reset the power window regulator motors using the power window switch on each door because the motors cannot be reset by remote operation using the power window master switch.
- In order to prevent a large amount of current from flowing in the wires, do not simultaneously reset 2 or more power window regulator motors.
- If the power window switch has been continuously operated for a long time, the power window regulator motor will stop so that no additional load will be applied to the motor. Continuing to operate the switch even after the motor has stopped will cause the switch to blink while restricting the AUTO UP/DOWN function and the remote UP/DOWN function. If this happens, reset the motor again after several minutes have passed.
- Whenever disconnecting the battery terminal, reset all the other systems besides the power window control system.
(a) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(b) Halfway open the power window by pressing the power window switch.
(c) Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for approx. 1 second after the power window is fully closed.
(d) Check that the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally.
If the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally, reset operations have been completed at this time. If not normal, follow steps below.
(1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 seconds.
(2) Connect the battery terminal.
(3) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(4) Halfway open the power window by pressing the power window switch.
(5) If the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally, reset operations have been completed at this time.
If not normal, follow steps below.
(6) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(7) Halfway open the power window by pressing the power window switch.
(8) Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for approx. 12 seconds after the power window is fully closed.
(9) Check that the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally.
7. RESET (INITIALIZE) (BACK DOOR CLOSER SYSTEM) (POWER BACK DOOR SYSTEM) (ELECTRICAL BACK DOOR OUTSIDE HANDLE SYSTEM)
(a) Resetting the power back door system:
The power back door ECU records the fully open position and the fully closed position of the power back door in its memory and the power back door fully opens and fully closes based on this memory. In the case where any of the batteries, fuses, power back door ECU or power back door drive unit are removed and then reinstalled, the power back door ECU loses the memory of the door positions. In such cases, resetting the system is necessary. However the back door closer system has no effect on ECU memory.
Reset the power back door system as follows:
(1) Fully close the power back door if opened.
(2) Check that the back door fully open and fully close.
- Unlock the power back door using the unlock button on the transmitter switch or the door control switch.
- Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
- Check that the power back door main switch is in the "OFF" position (not pushed).
- Check that the back door fully opens and fully closes by pushing the power back door opener/closer switch or PWR button briefly on the transmitter switch.
HINT: The jam protection function is enabled through the above initialization procedure.
