Rear Window Defogger System Does Not Operate
WINDSHIELD / WINDOWGLASS: WINDOW DEFOGGER SYSTEM: Rear Window Defogger System does not Operate
- Rear Window Defogger System does not Operate
DESCRIPTION
When the rear window defogger switch is turned ON, a rear window defogger activation request signal from the air conditioning amplifier is sent via the CAN line to the front controller. Then the front controller operates the rear window defogger.
HINT
This circuit uses the CAN communication line. Before performing the inspection, check that the CAN communication system is functioning normally.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK POWER SWITCH (SWITCH CONDITION)
(a) Ensure the key is inside the cabin.
(b) With the brake pedal released, check that the power source mode changes as shown below each time the power switch is pushed.
OK:
OFF -> ON (ACC) -> ON (IG) -> OFF
NG -- GO TO SMART ACCESS SYSTEM WITH PUSH-BUTTON START (POWER SOURCE MODE DOES NOT CHANGE) Power Source Mode Does Not Change
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (DEFOGGER RELAY)
(a) Select the Active Test using the Techstream to generate a control command, and then check that the rear window defogger operates.
NOTICE:
When the Body No.5 (front controller) related vehicle switch is ON, Active Test items related to the vehicle switch are prohibited (double operation prohibition). Check that the vehicle switches are OFF before performing Active Test.
Body No.5:
OK:
Rear window defogger operates normally.
NG -- INSPECT FUSE (DEFOG, D-IG1-3)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK DISPLAY AND NAVIGATION MODULE DISPLAY (OPERATION)
(a) Temporarily replace the display and navigation module display with a new or normally functioning one.
w/ Navigation System (for HDD) Removal
w/ Navigation System (for DVD) Removal
(b) Check that the malfunction disappears.
OK:
Malfunction disappears.
Result
C -- REPLACE AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER Removal
B -- END (DISPLAY AND NAVIGATION MODULE DISPLAY IS DEFECTIVE)
A -- END (DISPLAY AND NAVIGATION MODULE DISPLAY IS DEFECTIVE)
4. INSPECT FUSE (DEFOG, D-IG1-3)
(a) Remove the DEFOG H-fuse from the engine room No. 1 relay block.
(b) Remove the D-IG1-3 fuse from the driver side junction block.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
NG -- REPLACE FUSE
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. INSPECT DEFOGGER RELAY (DEFOG)
(a) Remove the defogger relay from the No. 3 relay block.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
NG -- REPLACE DEFOGGER RELAY
OK -- Continue to next step.
6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (DEFOGGER RELAY - FRONT CONTROLLER AND BATTERY)
(a) Remove the DEFOG relay from the No. 3 relay block.
(b) Disconnect the A51 front controller connector.
(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard voltage:
(d) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER - DEFOGGER RELAY AND BODY GROUND)
(a) Disconnect the S19 and W1 defogger connectors.
(b) Remove the DEFOG relay from the No. 3 relay block.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
8. CHECK FRONT CONTROLLER (OPERATION)
(a) Temporarily replace the front controller with a new or normally functioning one.
(b) Check that the malfunction disappears.
OK:
Malfunction disappears.
NG -- CHECK AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER (OPERATION)
OK -- END (FRONT CONTROLLER IS DEFECTIVE)
9. CHECK AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER (OPERATION)
(a) Temporarily replace the air conditioning amplifier with a new or normally functioning one Removal.
