4GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL: SFI SYSTEM: P0230: Fuel Pump Primary Circuit
P0230 - Fuel Pump Primary Circuit

DESCRIPTION

When the engine is cranked, a signal is sent from the power source control ECU STSW terminal to the ECM STSW terminal. Then voltage travels from the ECM STAR terminal through the park/neutral position switch to the STARTER relay coil. The STAR terminal also sends a signal to the STA terminal. When the STA signal and NE signal are input to the ECM, the ECM internal transistor Tr1 turns on, which causes power to be supplied to the C/OPN relay coil (C/OPN relay turns on). As a result, power flows through the F/PMP relay, causing the fuel pump to operate. If the engine is operating and NE signals are being output, the ECM internal transistor Tr1 is kept on (C/OPN relay turns on), and the fuel pump will continue operating. The fuel pump has a high and low speed setting. When the engine is starting or operating with a heavy load, the ECM internal transistor Tr2 turns off so that the F/PMP relay will close and the fuel pump will operate at the high speed setting. When the engine is idling or operating with a light load, Tr2 turns on, operating the F/PMP relay and causing current to flow through the fuel pump resistor to the fuel pump. This operates the fuel pump at the low speed setting.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Start the engine.

7. After starting the engine, wait 5 seconds [B].

8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [C].

9. Read Pending DTCs.

HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

11. Input the DTC: P0230.

12. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

13. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT
Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION

(a) Check if there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose.

HINT
There is fuel pressure if you will hear the sound of fuel flowing.

NG -- GO TO FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT Fuel Pump Control Circuit
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. CHECK ECM (FPR VOLTAGE)

(a) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:

Text in Illustration

NG -- INSPECT RELAY (F/PMP RELAY)

OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal

3. INSPECT RELAY (F/PMP RELAY)

(a) Inspect the F/PMP relay On-Vehicle Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE RELAY (F/PMP RELAY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (F/PMP RELAY - ECM)

(a) Remove the F/PMP relay from the engine room relay block No. 2.

(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):

Standard Resistance (Check for Short):

(d) Reinstall the F/PMP relay.

(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (F/PMP RELAY - C/OPN RELAY)
