Normal Operation
The charging system is hardwired to the powertrain control module (PCM) through circuit 8-BA25 (WH/RD) and circuit 10-BA25 (GY/RD). The PCM monitors the battery state of charge and provides generator voltage regulator controls, which effectively increase or decrease the generator output to maintain battery charge and to meet electrical demands on the system. The charging system status is then sent from the PCM to the instrument cluster over the standard corporate protocol (SCP) communication network, circuits 4-EG8 (GY/VT) and 5-EG8 (BU/WH). When the generator output is low, the PCM sends a command to the instrument cluster to turn on the charging system warning indicator. Instrument cluster DTC B1317 will be set if the battery voltage is greater than 17.82 volts ± 1.9 volts DC. Instrument cluster DTC B1318 will be set if the battery voltage is less than 9.0 volts ± 1.5 volts DC.
