Pinpoint Test G: The Stability/Traction Control System is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The stability/traction control system is controlled by the ABS module. The ABS module continuously monitors and compares the rotational speed of each wheel and when it detects a wheel spinning excessively, modulates brake pressure to the appropriate brake caliper. The ABS module will also send a message to the PCM along the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) bus to modulate engine torque by adjusting engine timing and decreasing fuel injector pulses.

The system can be disabled by pressing the stability/traction control switch located in the Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) or the HVAC module (depending on vehicle options), the switch is hard-wired to the Instrument Cluster (IC). When the stability/traction control switch is pressed, circuit CCA15 (YE/GY) is momentarily connected to the ground circuit GD114 (BK/BU) through the FCIM or the HVAC module. The IC detects this ground and sends a signal to the PCM and the ABS module along the HS-CAN bus to disable the stability/traction control system. The IC will also illuminate the stability/traction control indicator on the IC or the message center (if equipped).

Because the stability/traction control switch is grounded through the FCIM or HVAC, any concerns with those systems should be addressed before diagnosing the stability/traction control switch.

Certain DTCs being present in the ABS module or communication DTCs are present in the IC or PCM will disable the system. When the system is disabled due to DTCs being present, both the ABS warning indicator and the stability/traction control indicator will be illuminated.

- DTC P174F:23 Traction Control Enable/Disable Switch Lamp Circuit: Signal Stuck Low - If the stability/traction control switch is pressed and held, or stuck in place for more than 120 seconds or if the switch is pressed at all during the IC on-demand self test, DTC C1093 will be set.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- PCM
- ABS module
- IC
- Stability/traction control switch (part of the FCIM or HVAC module)

PINPOINT TEST G: THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.

-------------------------------------------------
G1 VERIFY THAT THE SYSTEM CAN BE ENABLED/DISABLED BY THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH

- Test drive the vehicle, press the stability/traction control switch and verify that the system can be enabled/disabled by the switch.
- Can the system be enabled/disabled by the switch?

Yes
EXPLAIN correct system operation to the customer.

No
GO to G2.

-------------------------------------------------
G2 CHECK FOR ABS MODULE, PCM AND IC DTCs

- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - All Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
- Are any DTCs present in the PCM, IC or ABS module?

Yes
For PCM DTCs, REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

For IC DTCs, REFER to the DTC Chart in Body Control Systems. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart

For ABS module DTCs, GO to the ABS Module DTC Chart. ABS Module DTC Chart

No
GO to G3.

-------------------------------------------------
G3 VERIFY THAT THE ABS MODULE IS CONFIGURED FOR STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL

- Configure the ABS module, refer to Programmable Module Installation (PMI) in Information Bus. Programming and Relearning
- Test drive the vehicle and verify that the traction control system operates correctly.
- Does the system operate correctly?

Yes
The concern was due to improper or incomplete ABS module configuration.

No
GO to G4.

-------------------------------------------------
G4 CHECK THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Disconnect: FCIM C2404B (vehicles with Navigation).
- Disconnect: HVAC-Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC) C288C (vehicles without Navigation).
- Disconnect: IC C220.
- Measure the resistance between IC C220-22, circuit CCA15 (YE/GY), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with Navigation, INSTALL a new FCIM.

If the vehicle is not equipped with Navigation, INSTALL a new HVAC module.

CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No
REPAIR circuit CCA15 (YE/GY). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
