Pinpoint Test AG: The Chime Sounds When The Driver Door Is Ajar (No Key In Ignition And Headlamps Off)
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the key-in-ignition warning status from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) communication bus.
On vehicles without Intelligent Access (IA), the key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch) is hardwired to the SJB through circuit CDC30 (BU/GY). When the key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder, the key-in-ignition switch closes and supplies voltage to the SJB.
On vehicles with IA, the SJB receives the key-in-ignition status from the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module through circuit CDC30 (BU/GY). When the ignition is placed in the ACC position or if the vehicle is turned off with the selector lever out of PARK, the RFA module provides voltage to the SJB through circuit CDC30 (BU/GY).
The SJB monitors the door ajar input from the LH front door and the key-in-ignition switch status. When the SJB detects a key-in-ignition voltage and the LH front door is open or ajar, the SJB sends the IPC a chime request message to sound the key-in-ignition warning chime.
- DTC B1217:15 (Passive Key-In-Ignition Output: Circuit Short to Battery or Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets in the RFA module when the RFA module detects an open or short to voltage on output circuit CDC30 (BU/GY).
- DTC B1352 (Ignition Key-In Circuit Failure) - an on-demand DTC that sets in the SJB if the SJB detects an open on the key-in-ignition switch input, circuit CDC30 (BU/GY) or if the SJB detects ignition START, RUN/START or RUN/ACC inputs without the key-in-ignition input.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch) (without IA)
- RFA module (with IA)
- SJB
PINPOINT TEST AG: THE CHIME SOUNDS WHEN THE DRIVER DOOR IS AJAR (NO KEY IN IGNITION AND HEADLAMPS OFF)
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Verify that the SHIFT TO PARK message is not displayed in the message center before proceeding with diagnostics.
-------------------------------------------------
AG1 CHECK THE IPC ILLUMINATION
- Verify the IPC is not illuminated with the headlamp switch off.
- Does the IPC illumination operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AG2.
No
REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
-------------------------------------------------
AG2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SJB SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1352 present?
Yes
If equipped with IA, GO to AG3.
If equipped without IA, GO to AG4.
No
GO to AG5.
-------------------------------------------------
AG3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE RFA MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the RFA module self-test.
- Is DTC P1217:15 present?
Yes
GO to AG5.
No
GO to AG4.
-------------------------------------------------
AG4 CHECK THE SJB IGNITION INPUT PIDs
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger.
- Select and monitor the SJB PIDs ignition ACC (IGN_A_ECU), ignition OFF (IGN_O_ECU), ignition RUN (IGN_R_ECU), and ignition START (IGN_S_ECU) while cycling the ignition from ACC, OFF, RUN and START.
- Do the SJB PIDs match the ignition mode?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REFER to Steering Column to diagnose the ignition outputs to the SJB. Testing and Inspection
-------------------------------------------------
AG5 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC30 (BU/GY) FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Measure the voltage between the SJB C2280b-35, circuit CDC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
GO to AG6.
No
INSTALL a new SJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
AG6 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC30 (BU/GY) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250 (Without IA) or RFA Module C2153d (With IA).
- Measure the voltage between the SJB C2280b-35, circuit CDC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
If not equipped with IA, INSTALL a new ignition switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
If equipped with IA, INSTALL a new RFA module. TEST the system for normal operation.
