Differential Case and Ring Gear - Conventional

















Disassembly

1. Remove the differential assembly from the differential housing. For additional information, refer to Differential Carrier Differential Carrier.

2. Remove and discard the 10 differential ring gear bolts.





3. NOTICE: Do not damage the bolt hole threads.

Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive off the differential ring gear.





4. Using the 2-Jaw Puller and Step Plate, remove the 2 differential bearings, if necessary.





5. Remove the differential pinion shaft bolt.





6. Remove the differential pinion shaft.





7. Rotate and remove the 2 differential pinion gears and 2 differential pinion thrust washers.





8. Remove the 2 differential side gears and 2 differential side gear thrust washers.





Assembly

1. Lubricate the 2 differential side gear thrust washers and the 2 differential side gear journals with rear axle lubricant.

2. Position the differential side gear thrust washers on the differential side gears.





3. Position the 2 differential side gear and thrust washer assemblies in the differential case.





4. Lubricate the 2 differential pinion thrust washers and 2 differential pinion gears with rear axle lubricant and assemble.





5. Engage the 2 differential pinion gears opposite the differential side gears.





6. Rotate the differential pinion gears to align with the differential pinion shaft bore.





7. Insert the differential pinion shaft.
- Align the bolt hole in the differential pinion shaft with the bolt hole in the differential case.





8. NOTE: If a new bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with threadlock and sealer prior to installation.

Install a new differential pinion shaft bolt finger-tight.





9. Using the Differential Side Bearing Installer, install the 2 new differential bearings.





10. Position the differential ring gear and the differential case. Align the bolt holes by starting 2 new bolts through the holes in the differential case and the differential ring gear. Press the differential ring gear on the differential case.





11. NOTE: Apply stud and bearing mount to the new bolt threads.

Install the 10 new differential ring gear bolts.

- Tighten to 114 Nm (84 lb-ft).
