Pinpoint Test AC: Intermittent No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, Communication Can Be Intermittently Established
Normal Operation
An open circuit HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) or circuit HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) may cause intermittent or unreliable communication to all modules on the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network).
The following modules communicate on the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) :
- 4X4 control module (if equipped)
- ABS module
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) (if equipped)
- Head Up Display (HUD) module (if equipped)
- Headlamp Control Module (HCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM)
- Parking Aid Module (PAM) (if equipped)
- PCM
- Power Steering Control Module (PSCM)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Restraints Control Module (RCM)
- Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) (if equipped)
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
PINPOINT TEST AC : INTERMITTENT NO HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION CAN BE INTERMITTENTLY ESTABLISHED
NOTE: Various modules set network DTCs during this test procedure. Clear the DTCs from all modules after the diagnostic procedure is complete.
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.
AC1 CHECK THE Data Link Connector (DLC) PINS FOR DAMAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the DLC (Data Link Connector).
- Inspect DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 for damage.
Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 OK?
Yes
GO to AC2.
No
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AC2 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC3.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AD. Pinpoint Test AD: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
AC3 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC4.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AD. Pinpoint Test AD: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
AC4 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
GO to AC5.
AC5 CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM DISABLED
NOTE: An Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) session must be established prior to disabling the PCM in this test step. If the PCM has failed communication during multiple attempts to identify the vehicle, first identify the vehicle manually by entering a PCM part number, calibration number or tear tag when prompted by the IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System).
NOTE: When a vehicle is manually identified by a PCM part number, calibration number or tear tag, the IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) does not automatically run a network test. The network test must be manually selected and run.
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) Fuses 23 (7.5A), 37 (10A) and 47 (15A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test A. Pinpoint Test A: The PCM Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses.
If the vehicle is equipped with a Headlamp Control Module (HCM), GO to AC6.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an HCM (Headlamp Control Module), GO to AC7.
AC6 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE HCM (Headlamp Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 33 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test K. Pinpoint Test K: The Headlamp Control Module (HCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AC7.
AC7 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS MODULE AND PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) Fuse 12 (20A).
- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) Fuse 34 (5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AC8.
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AC9.
AC8 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) C1463A.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module). GO to Pinpoint Test D. Pinpoint Test D: The Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module). GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: The ABS Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
AC9 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 26 (10A) and 29 (5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test C. Pinpoint Test C: The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AC10.
AC10 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE HUD (Head Up Display) MODULE DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 31 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test G. Pinpoint Test G: The Head Up Display (HUD) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AC11.
AC11 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 32 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test E. Pinpoint Test E: The Restraints Control Module (RCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AC12.
AC12 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 46 (7.5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) Does Not Communicate With the Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse.
If the vehicle is equipped with a 4X4 control module, GO to AC13.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a 4X4 control module, GO to AC14.
AC13 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: 4X4 Control Module C281.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT the 4X4 control module. GO to Pinpoint Test H. Pinpoint Test H: The 4X4 Control Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT the 4X4 control module. GO to AC14.
AC14 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - C-CM (Cruise-Control Module)
- Inspect the vehicle for a Cruise-Control Module (C-CM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a C-CM (Cruise-Control Module)?
Yes
GO to AC15.
No
GO to AC16.
AC15 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE C-CM (Cruise-Control Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: BJB (Battery Junction Box) Fuses 13 (5A) and 34 (20A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test I. Pinpoint Test I: The Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) Does Not Communicate With the Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AC16.
AC16 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) AND/OR PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 35 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse.
If the vehicle is equipped with a SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) and PAM (Parking Aid Module), GO to AC17.
If the vehicle is equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module) only, GO to Pinpoint Test J. Pinpoint Test J: The Parking Aid Module (PAM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AC18.
AC17 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: PAM (Parking Aid Module) C4014 or C4226A.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT the PAM (Parking Aid Module). GO to Pinpoint Test J. Pinpoint Test J: The Parking Aid Module (PAM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT the PAM (Parking Aid Module). GO to Pinpoint Test L. Pinpoint Test L: The Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
AC18 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Inspect the vehicle for an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?
Yes
GO to AC19.
No
GO to AC20.
AC19 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuse 14 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test Z. Pinpoint Test Z: The Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AC20.
AC20 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Inspect the vehicle for a Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module.
Is the vehicle equipped with an RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module?
Yes
GO to AC21.
No
An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AD. Pinpoint Test AD: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
AC21 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Fuses 12 (7.5A) and 27 (20A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
Do all other modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test Y. Pinpoint Test Y: The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AD. Pinpoint Test AD: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
