Flow Chart No. 7: Door Lock Motors/Switches Inoperative

Flow Chart No. 7 - Symptom - Door lock motors/switches inoperative.

The door locks are wired so that the lock and unlock switches on the doors can operate the door locks with or without a RAP module installed in the system. The door lock switches are wired directly to the relays.

When the RAP module operates the door locks, it provides a ground just like the door lock switches.

Both the GEM and RAP module operate the door lock switches (GEM performs the two-key-turn-unlock through the RAP module.

If the RAP module and GEM are both disconnected and the door locks still do not work, there is a switch, motor, lock mechanism, fuse or wiring issue. The RAP module uses the LOCK ALL and UNLOCK ALL circuits as outputs, but also monitors these circuits as inputs to see when the door lock switches are pressed.

Pressing the UNLOCK switch on the door can unlock all doors. It unlocks the driver's door by supplying power to the driver's door lock motor through the normally closed contacts of the driver's door unlock relay.

NOTE
^ If state is SHORT, check and service P/LG and P/Y circuits for short to ground or each other.

Step 1
Check mechanical operation of locks.
1. Manually (not electrically) cycle the lock by turning the key in the door.

2. Do the door lock mechanisms move freely?

Step 2
Door locks do not work with lock switches on the doors.

1. Check the fuse for both door lock motors.

2. Is the 20 A fuse OK?

Step 3
Check status of door lock switches.
1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 49 T088 0A0 to data link connector (DLC). Enter NGS Tester: RAP, PID/DATA and select DRLK_SW to monitor the door lock switches.

NOTE
^ Some vehicles may have power door locks, but may not have a RAP module system. It there is no RAP module, the tests are limited to voltage and resistance measuring.

2. Is NOS Tester DRLK_SW state OFF?

Step 4
Check operation of door lock switches.
1. Press look button on each door lock switch and confirm that NGS Tester, RAP DRLK_SW state changes to LOCK when switches are pressed.
2. Press UNLOCK button on each door switch and confirm that NGS Tester, RAP DRLK_SW state changes to UNLOCK when switches are pressed.

3. Does LOCK and UNLOCK state for each door lock switch occur?

Step 5
Check RAP module all lock output.
1. Enter in NGS_RAP ACTIVE COMMANDS and select DOOR LOCK CONTROL. Select the following: R DR LOC: ON or L DR LOC: ON.

2. Do all doors lock?

Step 6
Check RAP module unlock driver's door output.
1. Select L DRUNLOC.

2. Does driver's door unlock?

Step 7
Check RAP module all unlock output.
1. Select R DR UNLOC.

2. Do all doors unlock?

Step 8
Check door lock switch circuit.

1. Check P/Y circuit for continuity between all lock relay and door lock switch.
2. Check P/Y circuit for continuity to ground.

3. Is continuity and resistance less than 100 ohms?

Step 9

Check door unlock switch circuit.
1. Check P/LG circuit for continuity between all unlock relay and door lock switch.
2. Check P/LG circuit for continuity to ground.

3. Is continuity and resistance less than 100 ohms?

Step 10

Check door unlock power circuits.
1. Disconnect RAP module and GEM, then remove all lock relay, all unlock relay and driver's unlock relay.
2. Jumper battery voltage to the P/O wire of all unlock relay connector and jumper ground to P/B wire of all lock relay connector.

3. Do door lock motors unlock?

Step 11
Check door look power circuits.
1. Disconnect RAP and GEM modules.
2. Disconnect all lock relay, all unlock relay and driver's unlock relay.
3. Jumper battery voltage to P/B circuit of all lock relay connector and jumper ground to P/O circuit of all unlock relay connector.

4. Do door lock motors lock?
