Restraint System Diagnostic Tool Warning
WARNING: Restraint system diagnostic tools are for service only. Tools must be removed prior to operation the vehicle over the road. Failure to remove restraint system diagnostic tools could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
Pinpoint Tests
NOTE: During normal operation, the air bag indicator will illuminate continuously for 6 seconds after the ignition switch is placed to the RUN or the ON position. Be sure to cycle the ignition switch and look for a 6-seconds indicator prove-out without DTCs.
Normal Operation
The restraints control module (RCM) will communicate diagnostic trouble codes (DTCS) to the IDS or equivalent tester through the data link connector (DLC).
Possible Causes
An air bag indicator that is illuminated continuously or no communication with the RCM can be caused by:
- a DTC.
- damaged wiring, terminals or connectors.
- damaged ignition circuit.
- RCM disconnected from the vehicle harness.
- a loss of RCM ground.
- loss of RCM battery feed.
- instrument duster module.
- RCM is faulted.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough Inspection and Verification before proceeding with the Pinpoint Test.
