Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Timing Chain Removal / Installation - 4.0L

1-9:

Removal Note

1. Remove the valve covers.
2. Remove the fuel rail.
3. Remove the engine front cover.
4. Remove the thermostat housing.
5. Remove all of the roller followers.

Note:
- You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.

6. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (TDC).
7. Remove the LH hydraulic chain tensioner.





8. Remove the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.
(1). Install the camshaft sprocket holding tool SST and the adapter SST.
Tightening Torque 10 Nm {1.0 kgf-m, 89 in-Ibf}
(2). Remove the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.





9. Using the crankshaft holding tool SST to prevent the crankshaft from turning, remove the jackshaft sprocket bolt.





10. Remove the bolts and the primary chain tensioner.





11. Remove the primary chain and sprockets as an assembly.





12. Remove the LH cassette upper bolt.





13. Remove the LH cassette lower bolt and the LH cassette.





Installation Note

Note:
- The camshaft chain sprockets must be oriented correctly.

1. Position the LH cassette.





2. Install the LH cassette lower bolt.
Tightening Torque 19 Nm {1.9 kgf-m, 14 ft-Ibf}





3. Install the LH cassette upper bolt.
Tightening Torque 12 Nm {1.2 kgf-m, 9 ft-Ibf}





4. Install the primary chain and sprockets as an assembly.





5. Install the primary chain tensioner and the bolts.
Tightening Torque 9 Nm {0.9 kgf-m, 80 in-Ibf}





6. Using the crankshaft holding tool SST to prevent the crankshaft from turning, tighten the jackshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages.
Tightening Torque
Stage 1: 45 Nm {4.6 kgf-m, 33 ft-Ibf}
Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
7. Loosely install the camshaft sprocket bolt.

Note:
- You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.

Note:
- Install the LH hydraulic chain tensioner during camshaft timing.

8. Retime the LH and RH camshafts.
9. Install the camshaft roller followers.
10. Install the thermostat housing.
11. Install the engine front cover.
12. Install the fuel rail.
13. Install the valve covers.
