Automatic Transaxle Removal/Installation [AW6A-EL]
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AW6A-EL]
WARNING:
- Improperly jacking a transaxle is dangerous. It can slip off the jack and may cause serious injury.
CAUTION:
- To prevent the torque converter and transaxle from separating, remove the transaxle without tilting it toward the torque converter.
1. Disconnect both battery cables.
2. Remove the battery. Removal and Replacement
3. Remove the battery tray. Removal and Replacement
4. Remove the battery bracket. Removal and Replacement
5. Remove the air cleaner component and resonance chamber. Service and Repair
6. Remove the air cleaner bracket. Service and Repair
7. Remove the engine cover.
8. Remove the windshield wiper arm and blade. Service and Repair
9. Remove the cowl grille. Cowl Grille Removal/Installation
10. Remove the cowl panel. Cowl Panel Removal/Installation
11. Disconnect the connector and wiring harness from transaxle.
12. Remove the front mudguards. Service and Repair
13. Remove the splash shields. Splash Shield Removal/Installation
14. Drain the ATF. Automatic Transaxle Fluid (ATF) Replacement [AW6A-EL]
15. Perform the following procedures related to the suspension and axle.
a. Remove the front wheels and tires.
b. Disconnect the ABS wheel-speed sensors from steering knuckles.
c. Disconnect the brake hose bracket from shock absorbers.
d. Disconnect the tie-rod end from steering knuckles.
e. Disconnect the front lower arm from steering knuckles. Front Lower Arm Removal/Installation
f. Remove the front pipe. Service and Repair
g. Disconnect the stabilizer control links from shock absorbers. Front Stabilizer Removal/Installation
h. Remove the front crossmember bracket. Front Crossmember Removal/Installation
i. Remove the front crossmember. Front Crossmember Removal/Installation
16. Remove in the order shown in the figure.
17. Install in the reverse order of removal.
18. Add ATF to the specified level. Automatic Transaxle Fluid (ATF) Replacement [AW6A-EL]
19. Perform the "Neutral Position Learning" if removing the TCM on the transaxle.
20. Perform the following test according to the service item.

Test to be performed after the service work
Torque Converter Nuts Removal Note
1. Remove the cover as shown in the figure.
2. Hold the crankshaft pulley to prevent drive plate from rotating.
3. Remove the torque converter nuts.
No.4 Engine Mount Bracket Removal Note
1. Install the SST using the following procedure.
CAUTION:
- Refer to the SST instruction manual for the basic handing procedure.
NOTE:
- When installing the SST, adjust the position of each shaft so that they do not interfere with the vehicle body.
a. As shown in the figure, set the rear shafts of the SST to the left and right shock absorber nuts.
b. Install front foot No.2 to the left/right front shaft of the SST, then align the groove of the front shaft of the SST with the folded up part of the vehicle as shown in the figure.
c. Adjust the positions of the SST side bars so that they are the same height (left and right) and horizontal. Make sure each joint is securely tightened.
2. Remove the No.4 engine mount bracket.
Transaxle Removal Note
1. Support the transaxle on a jack.
2. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts (lower side) and bracket.
3. Remove the transaxle.
Transaxle Installation Note
1. Set the transaxle on a jack and lift it.
2. Install the transaxle mounting bolts (lower side) and bracket.
Tightening torque
- 37-52 Nm {3.8-5.3 kgf-m, 28-38 ft-lbf}
No.4 Engine Mount Bracket Installation Note
1. Install the No.4 engine mount bracket to the transaxle.
2. Temporarily tighten bolt A.
3. Temporarily tighten nuts B, C and bolt D.
4. Tighten nuts and bolt in the order of C->B->D.
5. Tighten bolt A.
Tightening torque
- Bolt A: 86-116 Nm {8.7-11 kgf-m, 63-85 ft-lbf}
- Nut B, C, Bolt D: 67-93 Nm {6.8-9.4 kgf-m, 50-68 ft-lbf}
Torque Converter Nuts Installation Note
1. Hold the crankshaft pulley to prevent drive plate from rotating.
CAUTION:
- Loosely and equally tighten the torque converter nuts, then further tighten them to the specified tightening torque.
2. Tighten the torque converter mounting nuts.
Tightening torque
- 40.5-54.7 Nm {4.13-5.57 kgf-m, 29.9-40.3 ft-lbf}
3. Install the cover as shown in the figure.
