Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder: Service and Repair



NOTE: If the lock cylinder/key is notchy or binds, spray lock cylinder with lock cylinder grease. If the complaint cannot be eliminated, replace lock cylinder and the key which has been in constant use. (Lock cylinder grease is available as part number 001 989 26 51 10.)

Removal:
1. Remove steering lock. Procedures



2. Press in press stud (arrow) and pull ignition/starter switch (S2/1) with locking shaft out of protective sleeve (36d).

NOTE: The lock cylinder (36) can only be replaced together with protective sleeve (36d) and cap (36b). On vehicles with automatic transmission, a parking lock valve (37h) is also installed on the ignition/starter switch (S2/1).

Installation:



3. Turn lock cylinder (36) into position "1" with the key (36c) and press in a new protective sleeve (36d) until the locking detent (36h) locks in position.

NOTE: Since 09/94 only the 4th version of the steering lock parts (increased anti-theft protection) are available as spare (replacement) parts.

4. Remove key.
5. Push cap (36b) onto the protective sleeve until the snap ring (36g) locks in position. The cap (36b) is permanently connected to the protective sleeve (36d).



6. Press ignition/starter switch (S2/1) with lock shaft into the protective cover (36d) until it locks in position.
