Principles of Operation

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Power Locks
The power lock/unlock feature requests all doors, including the liftgate, to lock or unlock upon a request from the door lock control switch, the remote keyless entry (RKE) keypad or the RKE transmitter. Power locking and unlocking of the doors functions independently of the ignition key position, vehicle speed or transmission position. The smart junction box (SJB) activates internal relays to supply the correct voltage and grounds for the door lock actuators.

If all doors, liftgate and hood (with perimeter alarm) are closed when a lock command is received, the turn signals provide 1 flash. If any doors, liftgate or hood (with alarm) are ajar, then no flash occurs.

Autolock
If the vehicle is equipped with the autolock feature, there are 4 methods to enable/disable the feature using the RKE keypad (if equipped), using the LH front door lock control switch, using the message center (if equipped) or the dealer may enable/disable the feature using a diagnostic tool.

The autolock feature automatically and conditionally locks all doors as a convenience to the customer. This feature operates only when the key is in the ON position.

Autolock occurs when all doors are closed (including the liftgate), the feature has seen a brake pedal application while speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), and then the speed increases to 5 km/h (3 mph) or greater.

Relock is dependent on an autolock event happening first.

Relock occurs after a door has been opened, the feature has seen a brake pedal application while speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), all doors become closed again, and then the speed increases to 5 km/h (3 mph) or greater.

Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the LH front door from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the SJB receives a lock command from a door lock control switch and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder with the LH front door open, the SJB commands the LH front door to unlock.

RKE External Antenna
The SJB uses an external coaxial antenna to receive remote transmitter signals.

RKE Transmitter

The RKE transmitter:
- locks or unlocks all vehicle doors and liftgate without a key.
- unlocks/opens a RH power sliding door and/or LH power sliding door (if equipped).
- opens/closes the power liftgate
- activates the perimeter alarm.
- arms and disarms the perimeter anti-theft system (if equipped).

The RKE transmitter has a minimum operating range of 10 m (33 feet).

RKE Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Unlock
The RKE transmitter provides unlock functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The RKE transmitter provides a 2-step process for unlocking the doors. Upon receipt of the first request for unlocking the doors, the RKE transmitter requests the SJB to unlock the LH front door only and activate perimeter lighting (if equipped). If another unlock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the RKE transmitter requests that both front doors, sliding doors and liftgate be unlocked.

RKE Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Lock
The RKE transmitter provides lock functions independently of key position, vehicle speed or transmission position. The RKE transmitter requests that all the doors be locked when the RKE transmitter LOCK button is pressed. When the LOCK button is pressed once all doors lock. If the LOCK button is pressed again within 3 seconds of the first, the horn chirps to confirm all doors (and hood, if equipped with alarm) are locked and closed. If any door, liftgate, or hood (with perimeter alarm) is ajar when the second lock request is received, 2 chirps are heard.

RKE Transmitter - LH/RH Power Sliding Door Open/Close
The RKE transmitter provides open and close functionality for power sliding doors when the transmission is in PARK and the speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph). Pressing the power sliding door button on the RKE transmitter twice within 3 seconds opens the door. With the power sliding door open, pressing the power sliding door button twice within 3 seconds closes the door.

RKE Transmitter-Power Liftgate Open/Close
The RKE transmitter provides open/close functionality for the power liftgate (if equipped). When in PARK or if the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph) with the liftgate closed, pressing the power liftgate button on the RKE transmitter opens the liftgate. With the liftgate open, pressing the power liftgate button twice within 3 seconds closes the power liftgate.

Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature provides audible and visual alarms which are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the PANIC button on a RKE transmitter whenever the key is in the OFF position. The SJB requests that the turn signals are flashed and horn sounds until the PANIC button is pressed again, 2 minutes and 45 seconds has elapsed since the time of activation, or the key is cycled to the ON position.

Perimeter Lighting
The perimeter lighting feature illuminates the exterior of the vehicle while the user approaches and enters the vehicle to provide better visibility to the user.

The perimeter lighting feature requests the headlamps and parking/position lamps to be on when the key is in the OFF position and the customer activates an external unlock feature (RKE transmitter, RKE keypad, door lock cylinder). The perimeter lighting feature requests the headlamps and park/position lamps to be off when 25 seconds have elapsed since the last external unlock activation, or the customer activates an external lock feature (RKE transmitter, RKE keypad), or the key is cycled to a position other than OFF.

RKE Keypad
The RKE keypad, located on the exterior of the LH front door, provides a method for the customer to access their vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The RKE keypad feature:
- locks all doors and liftgate while arming the perimeter alarm (if equipped).
- unlocks only the LH front door and disarms the perimeter alarm (if equipped).
- unlocks all doors and liftgate.
- programs/erases customer key code.
- enables/disables autolocking.
- opens/closes power sliding doors (if equipped).

The RKE keypad feature operates independently of key position status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a RKE keypad button is pressed, the RKE keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If LOCK ALL DOORS is entered, or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.

Each vehicle equipped with a RKE keypad is programmed with a 5-digit factory RKE keypad code. This code is provided to the customer through a wallet card in the owner literature package. In addition, this code is available through a diagnostic tool and is also printed on the SJB label. A personal RKE keypad code can be programmed into the SJB. When entering codes, each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the prior digit.

Anti-scan Feature
If the wrong code has been entered 7 times (35 consecutive button presses), the RKE keypad goes into an anti-scan mode. This mode disables the RKE keypad for 1 minute and the RKE keypad lamp flashes.

The anti-scan feature turns off after:
- 1 minute of RKE keypad inactivity.
- pressing the UNLOCK button on the RKE transmitter.
- the key is turned to the ON position.

Unlocking the Doors and Liftgate with the RKE Keypad
To unlock the LH front door, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit). The interior lamps will illuminate.

To unlock all doors, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (LH front door unlocks) and press the 3/4 control within 5 seconds. Opening and Closing the Sliding Doors with

Opening and Closing the Sliding Doors with the RKE Keypad
To open or close the sliding door, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit) then press the 5/6 button for the LH side door or 9/0 for the RH side door.

Locking the Doors with the RKE Keypad
It is not necessary to enter the factory set or personal code prior to locking all doors. To lock all doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 controls at the same time.

Central Locking/Unlocking
The central locking/unlocking function is independent of the ignition switch and transmission range selector lever position. Central unlocking of all the doors is accomplished with:
- LH or RH front door lock control switches (unless the unlock inhibit feature is enabled).
- 2 unlock commands from the RKE transmitter within 3 seconds.
- the RKE keypad.

Central locking of all doors is accomplished with:
- door lock control switches.
- a lock command from the RKE transmitter.
- the RKE keypad (if equipped).

When the vehicle is in an armed or full-alarm security state, any unlock command from the door lock control switches is ignored if the unlock inhibit feature is enabled. The door lock control switches are enabled if a valid unlock command is received from the RKE transmitter, RKE keypad, or the key is cycled to ON.
