Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

DTC 26

CIRCUIT OPERATION
- A system voltage is supplied to the stoplight switch (terminal 2).
- When the brake pedal is depressed, system voltage is applied to the PCM (terminal 123). The PCM judges that the brake pedal is depressed and the stoplight switch is on when system voltage is sensed at the PCM (terminal 123).

DTC SET CONDITIONS
- If the stoplight switch is on for five minutes or more while driving 50 km/h (31 mph), it is judged there is a short circuit in the stoplight switch and diagnostic trouble code number "26" is output.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this code to be set:
- Malfunction of the stoplight switch circuit
- Damaged connector
- Malfunction of the PCM

DIAGNOSIS

Required Special Tool: MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, make sure the ignition switch is "OFF" before connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991502.

STEP 1. Using scan tool MB991502, check data list item 26: Stoplight switch.
- When the brake pedal is depressed, the display should be "ON."
- When the brake pedal is not depressed, the display should be "OFF."
If the stoplight switch is operating properly, recheck for DTCs.
If the stoplight switch is not operating properly, go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Check that the stoplight illuminates.
If the stoplight illuminates, go to Step 3.

If the stoplight does not illuminate, check the stoplight switch circuit. If the switch is suspect, refer to Stoplight Switch. Recheck for DTCs.

STEP 3. Check harness connector C-65 or C-66 at the stoplight switch for damage.

If harness connector C-65 or C-66 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connector C-65 or C-66 is in good condition, go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Check harness connector C-92 at the PCM for damage.

If harness connector C-92 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connector C-92 is in good condition, go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check the harness wire between PCM connector C-92 and stoplight switch connectors C-65 , C-66 .

NOTE: After inspecting intermediate connector C-85, inspect the wire. If intermediate connector C-85 is damaged, repair or replace it Refer to Harness Connector Inspection.

If any harness wire between the PCM connector C-92 and stoplight switch connectors C-65 , C-66 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. Recheck for DTCs.
If the harness wire is in good condition, recheck for DTCs.
If the malfunction is not eliminated, replace the PCM.
