P0201
Injector Circuit:
Connectors:
CIRCUIT OPERATION
- The injector power is supplied from the MFI relay (terminal 1).
- The PCM controls the injector by turning the power transistor in the PCM "ON" and "OFF".
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
- The amount of fuel injected by the injector is controlled by the amount of continuity time the coil is grounded by the PCM.
- A surge voltage is generated when the injectors are driven and the current flowing to the injector coil is shut off.
- The PCM checks this surge voltage.
DTC SET CONDITIONS
Check Area
- Engine speed is lower than 1,000 r/min.
- Throttle position sensor output voltage is lower than 1.16 volts.
Judgment Criteria
- Injector coil surge voltage (battery positive voltage + 2 volts) has not been detected for two seconds.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this code to be set are:
- Injector failed.
- Open or shorted injector circuit, or loose connector.
- PCM failed.
DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tool:
MD998474: Test Harness
STEP 1. Using the analyzer, check the injector.
1. Disconnect the injector intermediate connectors A-04 and connect the test harness special tool (MB991348) in between.
2. Connect the analyzer special patterns pickup to each injector intermediate connector terminal to analyze each cylinder:
- Terminal 3 (green clip of the special tool) for the number 1 cylinder
- Terminal 2 (white clip) for the number 2 cylinder
- Terminal 1 (blue clip) for the number 3 cylinder
- Terminal 7 for (yellow clip) for the number 4 cylinder
- Terminal 6 (red clip) for the number 5 cylinder
- Terminal 5 (black clip) for the number 6 cylinder
NOTE: When measuring with the PCM side connector, connect an analyzer special patterns pickup to the each of the following terminals.
- PCM terminal 1 when measuring number 1 cylinder injector.
- PCM terminal 9 when measuring number 2 cylinder injector.
- PCM terminal 24 when measuring number 3 cylinder injector.
- PCM terminal 2 when measuring number 4 cylinder injector.
- PCM terminal 10 when measuring number 5 cylinder injector.
- PCM terminal 25 when measuring number 6 cylinder injector.
3. Start the engine and run at idle.
4. Measure the waveform.
- The waveform should show a normal pattern similar to the illustration.
5. Turn OFF the engine.
If the waveform does not show a normal pattern, go to Step 2.
If the waveform shows a normal pattern, it can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to vehicle level Testing and Inspection.
STEP 2. Check the injectors.
1. Disconnect each injector connector.
2. Measure the resistance between injector side connector terminals 1 and 2.
Standard value: 13 - 16 ohms [at 20° C (68° F)]
If within specifications, go to Step 3.
If not within specifications, replace the faulty injector. Then go to Step 6.
STEP 3. Check the power supply line at the injector connectors A-70 , A-71, A-72, A-73, A-74 and A-75.
1. Disconnect connectors A-70, A-71, A-72, A-73, A-74, A-75 and measure at the harness side.
2. Turn the ignition switch "ON".
3. Connect terminal 1 and the ground via a 20-ohms resistor.
Measure the current at this time.
- The current must be 0.5 ampere or more.
4. Turn the ignition switch "OFF".
If within specifications, go to Step 4.
If not within specifications, check the intermediate connector A-04, and repair or replace as required. Refer to vehicle level Testing and Inspection. If the intermediate connector A-04 is in good condition, repair the harness wires between the MFI relay connector C-59 and the injector connectors A-70, A-71, A-72, A-73, A-74, A-75. Then go to Step 6.
STEP 4. Check the circuits at the PCM connector C-89.
1. Disconnect the connector C-89 and measure at the harness side.
2. Disconnect PCM connector C-90. Using a jumper wire, connect terminal 49 to ground and activate the MFI relay.
3. Turn the ignition switch "ON".
4. Connect the terminals 1, 2, 9,10, 24 and 25 to ground via a 20-ohms resistor. Measure the current at this time. The PCM terminals correspond to the injectors as follows.
a. PCM terminal 1 when measuring number 1 cylinder injector.
b. PCM terminal 9 when measuring number 2 cylinder injector.
c. PCM terminal 24 when measuring number 3 cylinder injector.
d. PCM terminal 2 when measuring number 4 cylinder injector.
e. PCM terminal 10 when measuring number 5 cylinder injector.
f. PCM terminal 25 when measuring number 6 cylinder injector.
- The current should be 0.3 ampere or more.
5. Turn the ignition switch "OFF".
If within specifications, go to Step 5.
If not within specifications, check the intermediate connector A-04, and repair or replace as required. Refer to vehicle level Testing and Inspection. If the intermediate connector A-04 is in good condition, repair the harness wires between the injector connectors A-70, A-71, A-72, A-73, A-74, A-75 and the PCM connector C-89. Then go to Step 6.
STEP 5. Check harness connector C-89 at the PCM for damage.
If harness connector C-89 is damaged, repair or replace it.
Refer to vehicle level Testing and Inspection.
If harness connector C-89 is in good condition, replace the PCM.
Then go to Step 6.
STEP 6. Test the OBD-II drive cycle
1. Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. Refer to Procedure 6 - Other Monitor.
2. Read the diagnostic trouble code, and confirm that a diagnostic trouble code is not being output.
