Inspection Procedure 5

Inspection Procedure 5: One of the headlight(s) does not illuminate.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)

When one of the headlights does not illuminate, the wiring harness, connector(s), or the bulb may have a problem, or the fuse may be burned out.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

- Malfunction of the headlight bulbs
- Malfunction of the headlight assembly
- Damaged harness wires and connectors

DIAGNOSIS

Required Special Tools:

- MB992006: Extra fine probe
- MB991223: Harness set

STEP 1. Check a trouble spot.

Q. Which headlight (LOW or HIGH) does not illuminate?

(LOW) does not illuminate. : Go to Step 2.
(HIGH) does not illuminate. : Go to Step 7.
STEP 2. Connector check: A-61 [Halogen headlight (RH)], A-43 [Halogen headlight (LH)], A-62 [Discharge headlight (RH)], A-42 [Discharge headlight (LH)]
headlight assembly connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 3.
NO Repair the defective connector.
STEP 3. Check bulb.

Check the bulb(s) of headlight that does not illuminate.

NOTE:
If discharge-type lower beam headlights do not illuminate, their bulbs cannot be inspected.
In this case, assume the bulbs to be normal and proceed with steps.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 4.
NO Replace the bulb(s) of the light that does not illuminate.
STEP 4. Resistance measurement at the A-61 [Halogen headlight
(RH)], A-43 [Halogen headlight (LH)], A-62 [Discharge headlight
(RH)], A-42 [Discharge headlight (LH)]
headlight assembly connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.

(2)Measure the resistance between the connector of light which does not illuminate and the body ground.

- Measure the resistance between the A-61[ Halogen headlight (RH)], A-43[ Halogen headlight (LH)] headlight assembly connector terminal No. 4 and the body ground.[ Halogen headlight]
- Measure the resistance between the A-62[ Discharge headlight (RH)], A-42[ Discharge headlight (LH)] headlight assembly connector terminal No. 6 and the body ground.[ Discharge headlight]
OK: The measured value should be continuity exists (2 ohms or less).

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 6.

NO Go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check the following wiring harness

Check the wiring harness for open circuit between the following connectors:

- Wiring harness from A-61 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 4 to the body ground.[ Halogen headlight (RH)]
- Wiring harness from A-43 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 4 to the body ground.[ Halogen headlight (LH)]
- Wiring harness from A-62 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 6 to the body ground.[ Discharge headlight (RH)]
- Wiring harness from A-42 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 6 to the body ground.[ Discharge headlight (LH)]

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction How to Cope With Intermittent Malfunctions).
NO Repair the wiring harness.
STEP 6. Check the following wiring harness

Check the wiring harness for open circuit between the following connectors:

- Wiring harness from A-61 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 2 to the A-32X headlight relay (LOW) connector terminal No. 3.[ Halogen headlight (RH)]
- Wiring harness from A-43 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 2 to the A-32X headlight relay (LOW) connector terminal No. 3.[ Halogen headlight (LH)]
- Wiring harness from A-62 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 5 to the A-32X headlight relay (LOW) connector terminal No. 3.[ Discharge headlight (RH)]
- Wiring harness from A-42 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 5 to the A-32X headlight relay (LOW) connector terminal No. 3.[ Discharge headlight (LH)]

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Replace the headlight assembly that does not illuminate.
NO Repair the wiring harness.
STEP 7. Connector check: A-61 (RH), A-43 (LH) headlight assembly connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 8.
NO Repair the defective connector.
STEP 8. Check bulb.

Check the bulb(s) of headlight that does not illuminate.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 9.
NO Replace the bulb(s) of the light that does not illuminate.
STEP 9. Resistance measurement at the A-61 (RH), A-43 (LH) headlight assembly connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.

(2)Measure the resistance between the connector of light which does not illuminate and the body ground.

- Measure the resistance between the A-61 (RH), A-43 (LH) headlight assembly connector terminal No. 4 and the body ground.
OK: The measured value should be continuity exists (2 ohms or less).

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Go to Step 11.

NO Go to Step 10.

STEP 10. Check the following wiring harness

Check the wiring harness for open circuit between the following connectors:

- Wiring harness from A-61 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 4 to the body ground.
- Wiring harness from A-43 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 4 to the body ground.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction How to Cope With Intermittent Malfunctions).
NO Repair the wiring harness.
STEP 11. Check the following wiring harness

Check the wiring harness for open circuit between the following connectors:

- Wiring harness from A-61 headlight assembly (RH) connector terminal No. 7 to the A-24X headlight relay (HIGH) connector terminal No. 3.
- Wiring harness from A-43 headlight assembly (LH) connector terminal No. 7 to the A-24X headlight relay (HIGH) connector terminal No. 3.

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES Replace the headlight assembly that does not illuminate.
