Balance Shaft: Service and Repair
FORCE BALANCER ASSEMBLYFig. 9 Force Balancer Tightening Sequence:
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Oil pan.
2. Balancer assembly.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Rotate engine to bring number 1 or 4 cylinders to Top Dead Center (TDC) (crank counterweights at Bottom Dead Center (BDC).
2. Balancer onto block with balance weights at BDC (plus or minus one half gear tooth).
NOTICE: When installing the balancer, the end of the housing without dowel pins must remain in contact with the block surface. If it loses contact, gear engagement may be lost and permanent damage to either the crank or balancer gears may result.
3. Balancer bolts.
TIGHTEN
^ Bolts to 12 Nm (107 lb. in.) in the following sequence: 3-1-2-4.
^ Following the same sequence, tighten the short bolts to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.) plus 75 degrees (1 flat) and the long bolts to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.) plus 90 degrees (1 1/2 flats).
4. Oil pan.
