Test 4-10:

Circuit Description with MU5 Automatic Transaxle
The 2nd brake control solenoid is located in the control valve body of the transmission. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) turns the 2nd brake solenoid ON or OFF, this controls the application or release of the reverse clutch, which in turn reduces shift shock between transmission shift points. If the 2nd brake solenoid malfunctions, the shift shock will be extremely noticeable.

When the PCM detects a continuous open in the 2nd brake control solenoid circuit, then DTC P0788 sets. DTC P0788 is a type A DTC.

Conditions for Running the DTC
PCM detects a short in the solenoid circuit 4 times.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC P0788 sets when either of the following conditions occurs:

The PCM detects an open in the solenoid circuit when the solenoid is commanded ON/OFF.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
^ At the time of the first failure, the PCM records the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. The PCM stores this information as a Failure Record.
^ The PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the first consecutive drive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met.
^ The PCM stores DTC P0788 in PCM history.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
^ A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC.
^ The PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission related diagnostic fault occurring.
