Battery Negative Cable Replacement (LS4 - 5.3L)
Removal Procedure
Important: When replacing battery cables be sure to use replacement cables that are the same type, gauge and length.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (1). Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (L26 - 3.8L) (Service and Repair)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (LS4 - 5.3L) (Service and Repair) .
2. Reposition the cover (2) and loosen the positive battery terminal nut.
3. Remove the positive battery terminal from the battery.
4. Disconnect the battery cable connector (3) from the inline instrument panel (I/P) harness electrical connector (4).
5. Disconnect the I/P harness electrical connector (5) from the battery current sensor (6).
6. Remove the positive battery cable junction block cover.
7. Remove the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
8. Remove the positive battery lead terminal (2) from the bussed electrical center (BEC).
9. Un-clip and remove the BEC from the strut tower.
10. Remove the ground wire bolt (3) and reposition the wire (2) from the top rail.
11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
12. Remove the battery cable harness retaining clips (1, 4, and 5) from the front rail and fan shroud.
13. Remove the battery cable harness retainers from the engine cradle.
14. Remove the transaxle stud nut (1).
15. Remove the engine ground cable (6) from the transaxle stud.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Remove the positive battery cable nut (3) from the starter.
18. Remove the positive battery cable (2) from the starter motor BAT terminal.
19. Remove the battery cable harness from the retainer.
20. Remove the battery cable harness from the vehicle.
21. Carefully cut the tape on the wiring harness conduit.
22. Remove the negative battery cable from the wiring harness conduit.
23. If replacing the negative battery cable, perform the following:
1. Cut the tie straps and electrical tape attaching the battery current sensor to the battery cable.
2. Squeeze the negative battery cable branches together.
Important: Note the position of the battery current sensor prior to removal.
3. Slide the battery current sensor (1) off of the negative battery cable.
Installation Procedure
1. If replacing the negative battery cable, perform the following:
1. Slide the NEW battery current sensor (1) up onto the negative battery cable.
Important: Ensure that the tape tab is pointing away from the battery prior to installation.
2. Using NEW tie straps and electrical tape, attach the battery current sensor to the negative battery cable.
2. Install the negative battery cable to the wiring harness conduit.
3. Re-tape the wiring harness conduit.
4. Install the battery cable harness to the vehicle.
5. Install the battery cable harness to the retainer.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .
6. Install the positive battery cable (2) to the starter motor BAT terminal.
7. Install the positive battery cable nut (3) to the starter.
Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
8. Ensure that the engine harness ground terminal (5) is installed on the transaxle stud prior to installing the engine ground cable.
9. Install the engine ground cable (6) to the transaxle stud.
10. Install the transaxle stud nut (1).
Tighten the nut to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
11. Raise the vehicle.
12. Install the battery cable harness retainers to the engine cradle.
13. Install the battery cable harness retaining clips (1, 4, and 5) to the front rail and fan shroud.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Position the wire (2) to the top rail, and install the ground wire bolt (3).
Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
16. Install the BEC to the strut tower.
17. Install the positive battery lead terminal (2) to the BEC.
18. Install the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
19. Install the positive battery cable junction block cover.
20. Connect the I/P harness electrical connector (5) to the battery current sensor (6).
21. Connect the battery cable connector (3) to the inline I/P harness electrical connector (4).
22. Install the positive battery terminal from the battery.
23. Tighten the positive battery terminal nut and position the cover (2).
Tighten the nut to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
24. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (L26 - 3.8L) (Service and Repair)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (LS4 - 5.3L) (Service and Repair) .
