Preliminary work for checking camshaft timing

1. Remove rear wall cover -> 555919 Removing and installing rear wall cover - section on "Removing" 555919 Removing and Installing Rear Wall Cover.
2. Turn the engine clockwise at the crankshaft pulley to the TDC marking of cylinder 1. Fix with special tool locating pins 9595/1 (short locating pin).

3. Place jacks under the vehicle at the prescribed jacking points -> 401000 Lifting the vehicle.
4. Remove rear underbody cover -> 519419 Removing and installing rear cover - section on "Removing" 519419 Removing and Installing Cover for Rear Underbody.
5. Drain engine oil -> 170155 Engine oil and oil filter change - section on "Draining" Removal and Replacement.
6. Remove ground strap by unscrewing the Torx screw (M8 x 30) -arrow-.

Checking camshaft timing

Information

Do not turn engine crankshaft against the rolling direction of the engine.

Information

Ensure absolute cleanliness when working on the open engine. Make sure that no dirt gets into the engine.

1. Remove all four green caps on the camshaft housing covers on both cylinder banks. To do this, press a small screwdriver into the centre of the piercing point of each cap -arrows- and lever off the caps.

2. Check the cylinder side that is at the overlapping TDC first (the smaller circular cutout at the milled grooves of the inlet and exhaust camshafts is facing the cylinder head cover) using an adjusting gauge 9686. Then turn the engine a further 360° (as described above) and check the other cylinder side as well.

Subsequent work for checking camshaft timing

1. Mount two new green caps each onto camshaft-housing cover.
2. Mount ground strap, to do so fit Torx screw (M8 x 30) in place -arrow- and tighten. => tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.).

3. Install rear underbody cover -> 519419 Removing and installing rear cover - section on "Installing" 519419 Removing and Installing Cover for Rear Underbody.
4. Fill in engine oil -> 170155 Changing engine oil and oil filter - section on "Filling" Removal and Replacement.
5. Remove special tool locating pins 9595/1 (short locating pin).
6. Install rear panel cover -> 555919 Removing and installing rear panel cover - section on "Installing" 555919 Removing and Installing Rear Wall Cover.
