Preliminary work
DANGER
Vehicle can fall down
- Risk of squashing or crushing
- Risk of damage to the vehicle
-> Do not place any solid objects under the raised vehicle.
-> Ensure that the lifting platform is prevented from lowering.
-> Remove solid objects before lowering the vehicle.
-> Raise the vehicle only at the take-up points provided.
-> The outer take-up points should be used primarily.
1. Remove rear wall cover. -> 555919 Removing and installing rear wall cover - section on "Removing" Service and Repair.

-> 519419 Removing and installing cover for rear underbody 519419 Removing and Installing Cover for Rear Underbody.
DANGER
Risk of engine falling down.
- Danger of fatal injury, material damage.
-> Support the engine with the prescribed tool.
4. Support the engine using transmission jack V.A.G. 1383 A WE 1082 and transmission jack plate on the oil pan.
4.1. The weight must be distributed uniformly on the oil pan, not just in one specific area.
5. Remove lower part of engine carrier. -> 103219 Removing and installing engine carrier - section on "Removing".
Removing vibration damper
Information
- Do not start the engine while the vibration damper and drive belt are removed.
Information
Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:
- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.
- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)
1. Disconnect vibration damper -1-.
1.1. Use special tool turning device 9773 -2- to turn the vibration damper clockwise until a staking bore in the vibration damper is flush with the crankcase bore.
Turning crankshaft at the vibration damper
1.2. Use a short locating pin 9595/1 -1- to disconnect the vibration damper.
Disconnecting vibration damper
2. Remove the vibration damper -1-.
2.1. Unscrew six external Torx screws (E12, M8 x 1 x 25, fine thread) -2- , pull out the locating pin -3- and remove the vibration damper.
Screws on vibration damper
2.2. Check dowel pin and vibration damper for damage (e.g. cracks, deformation) and replace components if necessary.
2.3. Replace screws.
Installing vibration damper
Information
- Do not start the engine while the vibration damper and drive belt are removed.
Information
- Replace screws for vibration damper.
- The screw thread and crankshaft flange thread must not be greased.
- Clean the thread on the crankshaft flange to remove grease.
1. Fit the vibration damper -1- on the crankshaft flange. Check the position of the dowel pin.
1.1. Use a short locating pin 9595/1 to disconnect the vibration damper.
2. Fit six new external Torx screws (E12, M8 x 1 x 25, fine thread) -2- uniformly in diagonally opposite sequence.

3. Fit drive belt.
-> 137819 Removing and installing drive belt Service and Repair.
4. Tighten six external Torx screws according to tightening specifications.
4.1. Pre-tighten screws uniformly in diagonally opposite sequence.
=> Initial tightening: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
4.2. Final tightening using special tool electronic torque wrench, 2-100 Nm/1.5-74 ftlb.) 9768.
=> Torque angle: 90°+/-5°
5. Remove locating pin.
