69581900 Removing and installing driver's airbag unit

WM 695819 Removing and installing driver's airbag unit

Preliminary work for driver's airbag unit

Information

Operate the steering wheel with the battery disconnected. Before disconnecting the battery, observe the following points:

1. Insert ignition key into ignition lock, switch on ignition and then off again.
2. Leave ignition key inserted.
3. Disconnect battery. => Work instructions after disconnecting the battery

General warning notes

General warnings for driver's airbag unit

Removing driver's airbag unit

Overview of driver' airbag unit

Information

With the double-clutch transmission steering wheel version, the unlocking tool -1- (Torx with handle or screwdriver) must also be guided by hand while unlocking it.

Retaining bar for airbag

If the unlocking tool -1- is not "guided", the locking spring -2- can tilt sideways in the steering wheel.

If the locking spring -2- is tilted, it will not be possible to release the retaining bar -3-.

If the retaining bar cannot be released, the driver's airbag unit must be pressed into the steering wheel again several times using jerking movements and then released again.

1. Turn steering wheel 90° and stick a T30 (Torx with handle) or medium-size screwdriver through the opening of the steering wheel.

Releasing driver's airbag unit

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only detach connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.
-> Do not position anything on the airbag units.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

5. Unplug electric connector -3-.

Installing driver's airbag unit

Information

If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

Sample tear-off label shown >> airbag sensor

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

Tear-off label

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.

Information

Before installing the airbag unit, check to see whether the locking clip, the airbag unit mounting and/or the metal stop on the steering wheel are bent. Replace the damaged component if it is deformed. Only fit an airbag unit that has a perfectly functioning locking clip at the correct position. The locking clip must not jam or become hooked.
