Preliminary work for head airbag unit

Removing head airbag unit
WARNING
Incorrect handling of airbag units
- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur
-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

- The work steps are described for the left rear door of the vehicle and must be performed in the same way on the other doors. Any different work steps are marked/highlighted.
Installation position of head airbag unit
1. Release electric plug connection -a- and pull off connector.

Information
- The fastening clips must not be damaged when removing the head airbag units.
2. Unscrew fastening screws -1, 2, 3, 4- one after the other and unclip twist lock -12-.

3. Unscrew fastening screws -5, 6, 7, 8- one after the other.

4. Unscrew fastening nuts -9, 10- one after the other and then the fastening screw -11-.

5. Remove head airbag unit to the rear out of the vehicle.

Information
If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.
Installation position of head airbag unit
Information
Always replace the fastening screws and nuts after customer service and reworking. The micro-self-locking screws must not be treated, greased or loosened and then screwed on again.

- Make sure that the head airbag unit is not pinched.
1. Position head airbag onto screw points and screw down using fastening screw -1- and fastening nuts -2, 3-.

2. Position head airbag in the centre and screw down with the fastening screws -4, 5, 6, 7- one after the other.

3. Position head airbag at the front.

4. Clip in twist lock -12-.
5. Screw down head airbag with the fastening screws -8, 9, 10, 11- one after the other.
6. Insert electric plug connection until the connector engages securely and lock it in place -arrow-.
