ETS control unit, idling control outside adaption limits

Fault symptom
Poor driveablity.

Test procedure

Check and deal with any fault codes in the LH and DL systems.

Check for leaks in the induction system or the presence of detritus

The check must include both the intake and discharge sides of the turbo the downstream and upstream sides of the throttle housing, and also the purging valve on the charcoal canister (ELCD), including the connector.

Pressure-testing the turbo system:

1 Raise the car. Disconnect the pressure hose at the turbo unit and fit a plug, part No.83 94 587, in the end. Tighten the hose clip and lower the car to the ground.

2 Disconnect the pressure hose at the throffle housing and fit a plug with nipple, part No. 83 94 595 in the end. Tighten the hose clip.

3 Connect the pressure testing equipment, part No.83 93 514, to the nipple.

4 Connect the Pressurelvacuum pump, part No. 30 14 883, to the vacuum hose connected to the turbo's by-pass valve and pump up a pressure of about 0.5 bar in the by-pass valve.

Note: Exercise care when pressurizing the turbo system. Excessive pressure could damage hoses and connections.

5 Connect a compressed-air gun to the pressure testing equipment and carefully raise the pressure to 1 bar.

Check that the pressure does not drop by more than 0.1 bar/30 seconds. If it drops faster or a hissing sound is heard, check for leaks in the hoses, pipes and connections.

6 On completion of pressure testing and checking, disconnect the pressure-testing equipment and reconnect the pressure and vacuum hoses.
