Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair




Crankshaft Balancer Replacement

Special Tools
* EN 46547 Flywheel Holding Tool
* EN-48034 Harmonic Balancer Installer
* J 41816-A Crankshaft Balancer Remover
* J 41816-2 Crankshaft End Protector
* J 45059 Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (LL8) (Service and Repair)Radiator Replacement (LH6) (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement (Service and Repair).




3. Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt. Discard the bolt.




4. Remove the service slot plug.





Note: The crankshaft balancer does not have a key-way, and the crankshaft could turn when tightening, causing the improper torque.

5. Install the EN 46547 (1) into the flywheel teeth.
6. Lower the vehicle.




7. Install J 41816-2 and J 41816-A to the balancer.

Note: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.

8. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
9. Remove the puller and the J 41816-A .
10. Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
11. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection (Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection).

Installation Procedure

Note: The crankshaft balancer does not have a key-way; so the crankshaft could turn when tightening, causing an improper torque. Make sure to follow the installation procedure to prevent damage.

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Install a new crankshaft balancer shim GM P/N 12578073 over the crankshaft snout, against the crankshaft gear.
A new balance will include a shim.




3. Using the EN-48034 install and seat the crankshaft balancer.
4. Remove the EN-48034 .





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

5. While still holding the flywheel, install the balancer washer and a new bolt and tighten to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.). Use the J 45059 in order to tighten the balancer bolt an additional 180 degrees.
6. Remove the torque converter holding tool.




7. Install the torque converter access plug into the oil pan.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement (Service and Repair).
10. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (LL8) (Service and Repair)Radiator Replacement (LH6) (Service and Repair).
