Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENTREMOVAL
IMPORTANT: Record all pre-set radio stations.
1. Turn ignition Off:
2. Loosen battery cover screws and remove battery cover.
3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
4. Disconnect positive battery cable.
CAUTION: DO NOT TIP BATTERY OVER A 45 degrees ANGLE OR ACID COULD SPILL.
5. Loosen battery hold down bolt and remove battery and battery hold down.
6. Remove Underhood Fuse Block (UHFB) cover.
7. Remove positive battery cable and Electric Power Steering (EPS) wire from B+ terminal at UHFB.
8. Open all retainer clips and remove all cables, lines and harnesses from battery cooling box.
9. Loosen UHFB block connector retaining bolts.
10. Unfasten UHFB from its housing and disconnect forward lamp harness.
11. Remove battery cooling box bolts.
12. Pull inlet duct away from battery cooling box.
13. Rotate UHFB out of way and remove battery cooling box.
14. Disconnect ECM J1 and J2 harness connectors.
15. Remove ECM attachment bolts and remove ECM.
INSTALLATION
1. Install ECM and ECM attachment bolts, making sure the ground wire is attached between the upper front bolt and ECM case.
Tighten
Engine Control Module Attachment Bolts to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
2. Connect J1 and J2 harness connectors (J1 harness connector has more wires in its harness and is the connector closest to the front of the dash). Make sure the connectors arc folly seated and locked into position.
IMPORTANT: Alignment of inlet and outlet ducts with battery cooling box is critical to ensure proper airflow to battery.
3. Position battery cooling box on tray so that inlet and outlet ducts are properly aligned.
IMPORTANT: Over tightening battery cooling box bolts will break/crack plastic.
4. Install battery cooling box bolts.
Tighten
Battery Cooling Box Bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
5. Install battery cooling box side support bolt.
Tighten
Battery Cooling Box Side Support Bolt to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
6. Connect forward lamp harness to UHFB and attach UHF13 into housing.
7. Install UHFB connector retaining bolts.
Tighten
Harness Connector Retainer to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
8. Secure all cables, lines and harnesses into retaining B clips.
9. Attach positive battery cable and EPS wire to B+ terminal at UHFB and tighten nut.
Tighten
UHFB B+ Terminal Nut to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
CAUTION: DO NOT TIP BATTERY OVER A 45 degrees ANGLE OR ACID COULD SPILL.
10. Insert battery and install battery hold down bolt.
Tighten
Battery Hold Down Bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
11. Connect positive battery cable to battery.
Tighten
Battery Terminal Bolts to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
12. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
Tighten
Battery Terminal Bolts to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
13. Install UHFB cover.
14. Install battery cooling box cover and tighten screws.
Tighten
Battery Cooling Box Cover Screws to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.)
15. Reprogram radio stations.
16. If the ECM has been replaced, it must be reprogrammed with the correct software and calibrations. Use the Service Stall System (SSS) to perform the reprogramming function. Programming and Relearning
NOTE: Make sure to select the correct option content for the specific vehicle being programmed.
17. Perform the Security System Passlock Relearn procedure, using the Service Stall System. Programming and Relearning
18. Leave ignition On for 1 minute to enable the ECM to learn the throttle body.
19. Turn ignition Off for I0 seconds, and then turn ignition back On.
20. Clear DTCs in all controllers.
NOTE: The ECM will automatically learn the crankshaft variation while driving. No manual procedure is required.
