Excessive Crankshaft Variation Symptom:

The PCM receives signals from the crankshaft position sensor to determine the position of the crankshaft at various degrees of rotation. The PCM can then base misfire diagnostics on the principle that crankshaft velocity will increase as each cylinder contributes its power input. The PCM must know precisely the degree of variability in crankshaft notches to perform the misfire diagnosis functions. Replacement of either the PCM or the crankshaft requires a "crankshaft learn" procedure to learn the variability of the crankshaft notches. DTC P1336 will set if the learn procedure has not been performed due to replacement or reprogramming.

DTC PARAMETERS
^ The PCM has not successfully learned the crankshaft position system variation.
^ P0336, P0340, or P0341 are not set.

IMPORTANT:
^ Do not transfer PCMs from one vehicle to another without resetting the crankshaft adaptives and performing the crankshaft learn procedure. The learned notches will be different from one vehicle (crankshaft) to another. Failure to perform this procedure may result in false misfire detection.
^ Anytime a crankshaft position sensor is replaced, the crankshaft learn procedure must be performed.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
^ The crankshaft notch learn routine will not run if misfire conditions are detected. If any other DTCs are present, diagnose and repair those first. When finished with repairs, perform the "crankshaft learn" procedure.

CAUTION: Set the vehicle parking brake and block the drive wheels when performing the crankshaft position system variation learning procedure in order to prevent personal injury. Release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. Once the learn procedure is completed, the PCM will return the engine control to the operator and the engine will respond to the throttle position.

DTC P1336 will only set if the PCM has not learned the crankshaft position system variation. The PCM only needs to learn this variation once per life cycle of the vehicle unless the camshaft position sensor to crankshaft relationship is disturbed. Removing a part for inspection and then reinstalling the same part is considered a disturbance.
