Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor input/output circuitry consists of an oil temperature sensor signal (-) (OTG), and an oil temperature sensor signal (+) (OT). The sensor converts the transmission oil temperature inside the transmission into an electrical signal and transmits it to the transmission control module (TCM).

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0711
* There is no transmission range switch DTC P0705.
* The transmission is not in Emergency Mode.
* The transmission oil temperature is less than 20°C (68°F) at initialization.
* The transmission oil temperature is between -30 to +150°C (-22 to +302°F).
* The transmission range is D, 3, 2, or 1.
* The vehicle speed has been greater than 40 km/h (24 mph) at least once.

P0712
* The engine is running for greater than 2 seconds.
* The transmission is not in Emergency Mode.

P0713
* There is no engine coolant temperature DTC P1258.
* The transmission is not in Emergency Mode.
* The drive time is greater than 600 seconds (10 minutes).

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0711

The TCM detects that the transmission oil temperature has not changed at least 1.5°C (35°F) for 10 minutes.

P0712

The TCM detects that the transmission oil temperature is less than 1.5°C (35°F) for 5 minutes.

P0713

The TCM detects that the transmission oil temperature is greater than 150°C (302°F) for 12 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTC P0711, DTC P0712, and DTC P0713 are Type A DTCs.
* The TCM will disable DTC P1719.
* The TCM will default the transmission oil temperature to 200°C (392°F).
* The TCM inhibits Hot Mode.
* The TCM inhibits Winter Mode.
* No neutral control.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0711, DTC P0712, and DTC P0713 are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the TFT harness at the sensor.
2. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the TFT sensor high signal circuit and low signal circuit, harness side.

If not within the specified range, test the TFT harness for a short to ground or a open/high resistance, If the harness does not test normal, replace the AT wiring harness. If the harness tests normal, replace the TCM.

3. Verify the scan tool TCM, Trans. Fluid Temp. parameter is less than 11°C (52°F).

If greater than the specified value, replace the TCM.

4. Install a 3-A fused jumper wire between the TFT sensor harness high signal circuit and low signal circuit. Verify the scan tool TCM, Trans. Fluid Temp. parameter is greater than 109°C (228°F).

If less than the specified value, replace the TCM.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the TFT sensor.

Component Testing

Static Test
1. Place the TFT sensor in water with a temperature of 10°C (50°F). Test for 5.8-7.1K ohms between the TFT sensor high signal circuit and low signal circuit.

If not within the specified range, replace the TFT sensor.

2. Place the TFT sensor in water with a temperature of 145°C (293°F). Test for 100-120 ohms between the TFT sensor high signal circuit and low signal.

If not within the specified range, replace the TFT sensor.

Repair Instructions
