3MZ-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0016: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

DTC P0016 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

DTC P0018 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 2 Sensor A)

DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor (NE signal) consists of a magnet, iron core and pickup coil.
The NE signal plate (crankshaft position sensor plate) has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The NE signal sensor generates 34 signals for each engine revolution. This sensor monitors a plate (timing rotor) located on the crankshaft timing pulley and is used by the ECM (included in the hybrid vehicle control ECU) to detect crankshaft angle and engine speed (RPM/NE). As the crankshaft timing pulley rotates through an engine revolution, this sensor communicates the rotation of the NE signal plate as a pulse signal to the ECM. Based on the signal, the ECM controls fuel injection time and ignition timing.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
- The ECM (included in the hybrid vehicle control ECU) optimizes the valve timing by using the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system to control the intake camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, the oil control valve and the VVT controller.
- The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the oil control valve. This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. The VVT controller can advance or retard the intake camshaft. The ECM calibrates the intake valve timing by setting the intake camshaft to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. The ECM closes the oil control valve to retard the cam. The ECM stores this value as the VVT learning value. When the difference between the target and actual intake valve timing is 5°CA (Crankshaft Angle) or less, the ECM stores it.
- If the VVT learning value matches the following conditions, the ECM determines that the VVT system is malfunctioning and sets the DTC.

- VVT learning value: Less than 23°CA, or more than 45°CA.
- Above condition continues for 18 seconds or more.
- This DTC indicates that the intake camshaft has been installed toward the crankshaft at an incorrect angle, caused by factors such as the timing chain having jumped a tooth.
- This monitor begins to run after the engine has idled for 5 minutes.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT: Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM (included in the hybrid vehicle control ECU) records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 OR P0018)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(d) Read the DTCs.
Result:

HINT: If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0018 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B -- GO TO DTC CHART Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions
A -- Continue to next step.
2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OIL CONTROL VALVE)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Switch the hybrid vehicle control ECU from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream Check Mode Procedure.
(c) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(d) Warm up the engine.
(e) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
(f) Check the engine speed while operating the oil control valve using the Techstream.
OK:

NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE OR JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING BELT)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0018)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Clear the DTCs Check Mode Procedure.
(d) Start the engine and warm it up.
(e) Switch the hybrid vehicle control ECU from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream Check Mode Procedure.
(f) Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
(g) Read the DTCs using the tester.
OK:
No DTC output.
NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE OR JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING BELT)
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE OR JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING BELT)

(a) Remove the cylinder head covers RH and LH.
(b) Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft.
(c) Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position.
(d) Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align.
(e) Turn the crankshaft clockwise 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again.
OK:
The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position.
NG -- ADJUST VALVE TIMING
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (BANK 1 OR BANK 2)
(a) Remove the intake camshaft timing oil control valve.

(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

(c) Apply positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.
OK:
Valve moves quickly.
(d) Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve.
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
(a) Remove the oil control valve filter.
(b) Check that the filter is not clogged.
OK:
The filter is not clogged.
NG -- REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK -- Continue to next step.
7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY (BANK 1 OR BANK 2)
(a) Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly Components.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0018)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
