Vehicle Stability Control System (For Vacuum Brake Booster)

BRAKE CONTROL: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM (for Vacuum Brake Booster): C1231/31: Steering Angle Sensor Circuit Malfunction
C1231/31 - Steering Angle Sensor Circuit Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The steering angle sensor signal is sent to the skid control ECU via the CAN communication system. When there is a malfunction in the CAN communication system, it will be detected by the steering angle sensor zero point malfunction diagnostic function.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
* When U0073/94, U0123/62, U0124/95 and/or U0126/63 is output together with C1231/31, inspect and repair the trouble areas indicated by U0073/94, U0123/62, U0124/95 and/or U0126/63 first U0073.
* When the speed sensor or the yaw rate and deceleration sensor has trouble, DTCs for the steering angle sensor may be output even when the steering angle sensor is normal. When DTCs for the speed sensor or yaw rate and deceleration sensor are output together with other DTCs for the steering angle sensor, inspect and repair the speed sensor and yaw rate and deceleration sensor first, and then inspect and repair the steering angle sensor.

PROCEDURE

1. PERFORM ZERO POINT CALIBRATION OF STEERING ANGLE SENSOR

(a) Drive the vehicle straight ahead at 35 km/h (22 mph) or more for at least 5 seconds.

(b) Check that the centered position of the steering wheel is correctly set while driving straight ahead.

HINT
If front wheel alignment and steering position are adjusted as a result of abnormal centered position of the steering wheel, acquire yaw rate and deceleration sensor zero point again after the adjustments are completed.

OK:

The centered position of the steering wheel is correctly set.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream ON.

(d) Check that the steering wheel is centered.

(e) Select the Data List mode on the Techstream.

ABS/VSC/TRAC

(f) Check that the steering wheel turning angle of the steering angle sensor changes when turning the steering wheel.

OK:

Turning the steering wheel to the left: Value increases

Turning the steering wheel to the right: Value decreases

NG -- CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. RECONFIRM DTC

(a) Clear the DTC Vehicle Stability Control System (for Vacuum Brake Booster).

(b) Start the engine.

(c) After driving the vehicle straight ahead at 15 km/h (9.3 mph) or more for a few seconds, drive the vehicle at a speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) or more and turn the steering wheel to the right and left for several seconds.

(d) Check if the same DTC is recorded Vehicle Stability Control System (for Vacuum Brake Booster).

4. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

(a) Check if the CAN communication system DTC is output How to Proceed With Troubleshooting.

A -- Continue to next step.

5. CHECK STEERING ANGLE SENSOR

(a) Check that the steering angle sensor has been installed correctly Installation.

OK:

The sensor is installed correctly.

NG -- INSTALL STEERING ANGLE SENSOR CORRECTLY Installation
OK -- Continue to next step.

6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR - BATTERY AND BODY GROUND)

(a) Remove the steering wheel and the column cover lower.

(b) Disconnect the steering angle sensor connector.

(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard voltage:

(d) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

7. REPLACE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR

(a) Replace the steering angle sensor Removal.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

8. RECONFIRM DTC

(a) Clear the DTC Vehicle Stability Control System (for Vacuum Brake Booster).

(b) Start the engine.

(c) Drive the vehicle at a speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) or more and turn the steering wheel to the right and left for several seconds.

(d) Check if the same DTC is recorded Vehicle Stability Control System (for Vacuum Brake Booster).
