P0013

1GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0013, P0023: Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1)
P0023 - Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 2)

DESCRIPTION

- These DTCs are designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft timing oil control valve circuit. If the duty-cycle for the camshaft timing oil control valve is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store the DTC.

- The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system adjusts the exhaust valve timing to improve driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The camshaft timing oil control valve is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time of the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

These DTCs are designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft timing oil control valve circuit. If the duty-cycle for the camshaft timing oil control valve is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store the DTC.

COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).

4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Wait 5 seconds.

7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code [B].

8. Read the pending DTCs.

HINT
* If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

10. Input the DTC: P0013 or P0023.

11. Check the DTC judgment result.

12. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
* If DTC P0013 is output, check the bank 1 VVT system for the exhaust camshaft circuit.
* Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
* If DTC P0023 is output, check the bank 2 VVT system for the exhaust camshaft circuit.
* Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
* Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK DTC (DTC P0013 OR P0023)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Clear the DTCs after recording the freeze frame data and DTCs.

(c) Turn the ignition switch off.

(d) Allow the engine to idle and check DTCs.

(e) Check that P0013 or P0023 is output.

OK:

P0013 or P0023 is output.

NG -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for Exhaust Side of Bank 1, 2) Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
