P0020 - Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)
DESCRIPTION
The VVT (variable valve timing) system adjusts the intake valve timing to improve driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the VVT controller to adjust the valve timing.
The camshaft timing oil control valve is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies the 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
This DTC is designed to detect open or short circuits in the camshaft timing oil control valve (for intake camshaft) circuit. If the camshaft timing oil control valve duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the ignition switch is on (IG) or engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
6. Wait 5 seconds.
7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
8. Read the pending DTCs.
HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
10. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
11. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
12. If the judgment result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If DTC P0010 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the bank 1 side VVT system.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
- If DTC P0020 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the bank 2 side VVT system.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
PROCEDURE
1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OIL CONTROL VALVE FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2).
(d) Check the engine speed while operating the oil control valve using the Techstream.
OK:
NG -- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
(a) Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve Inspection.
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the intake camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Bank 1
Bank 2
Standard resistance (Check for short):
Bank 1
Bank 2
(d) Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE - ECM)
