Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks




VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), Connecting

Test conditions:
- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK.
- Fuses 14 (S14) and 21 (S21) OK.
- Check Ground (GND) connections for transmission:
- Check Ground (GND) connections for corrosion and poor contact; repair if necessary.
- Ground (GND) connecting point is located on right of relay plate.
- Check battery Ground (GND) strap and Ground (GND) strap between battery and transmission.
- Selector lever in position "P" and parking brake applied.
- Remove stowage compartment in front of relay plate.
- Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST):







- With ignition turned off, connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG 1551/1 adaptor cable as follows to Data Link Connectors (DLC) above relay plate.
- Connect black plug for VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) voltage supply to black DLC.
- Connect white plug to white DLC. (The blue plug is not required.)

1) operating modes 1 and 2 are displayed alternately


NOTE:
- Additional operating instructions can be printed out by pressing the HELP key of VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).
- The -> key is used to advance the Scan Tool program.
- An automatic check can be carried out in the "Rapid data transfer" operating mode. All vehicle control modules will then be interrogated automatically.

- Turn on ignition.
- Turn on printer with PRINT key (indicator lamp in key lights up).
- Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer" mode.

- Press keys -0- and -2-. (To enter address word 02 for "transmission electronics".)

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) identification, TCM coding, and the dealership number of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) are displayed:

Transmission Control Module (TCM) identification
Depending upon build level (program level) the Transmission Control Module (TCM) can indicate a different Transmission Control Module (TCM) identification, to that shown in the example.
- 098 927 731 A: Part No. (example)
- AG4 Gearbox 098 (Digimat): 4-speed automatic transmission 098
- 0843: EPROM (program level)
- Coding 00000: not required for current version.
- WSC 131071: dealership number (example) of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) with which the most recent coding was performed.

Control module does not answer! HELP


By pressing the HELP key, a list of possible malfunctions is printed out.
- After eliminating possible causes of malfunctions, enter address word 02 for "transmission electronics" again.
- Press -Q- key to confirm input.

If "Control module does not answer!" appears again:

Check power supply, Battery Positive Voltage (B+), to Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Perform electrical test, test step 1. Transmission: Electrical Testing
- Check wiring connections to Data Link Connector (DLC) sockets.
- See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table, under DTC 65535 for Control Module Malfunctioning. VAG Codes
- Press -> key.
