Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair

NOTE: With cylinder head installed

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items
- 3122B Spark plug wrench
- 2036 Assembly tool
- 3047A Puller
- 3129 Installing tool
- VW 541/1A Lever with VW 541/5 press tool
- VW 653/3 Pressure hose

Removal
- Remove camshafts, refer to ReplacementService and Repair
- Remove hydraulic lifters (do not interchange) and store with the contact surface downwards.
- Remove spark plugs using 3122B spark plug wrench
- Set piston of appropriate cylinder to "bottom dead center"





- Install 2036 assembly tool and adjust mountings to height of studs
- Screw compressed air hose VW 653/3 into spark plug thread and apply a continuous pressure of 85 psi minimum
- Remove valve springs with lever VW 541/1A and press tool VW 541/5

NOTE: Tight valve keepers can be loosened with a light hammer-tap on the lever

- Remove valve stem seals using tool 3047A

Installation





- To avoid damaging the new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem
- Oil valve stem seal -B-, place it on tool 3129 and carefully push it onto the valve guide
