Camshaft Position Sensor, Checking
Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1598/18 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter (or equivalent)
- VW 1594 Adapter kit
- Wiring diagram
Test conditions
- Perform test when DTC 00513 is recognized
- Battery Positive Voltage: 11.5 Volts minimum
Test sequence
- Disconnect 3-pin harness connector from Camshaft position sensor (arrow).
- Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt DC range.
- Connect multimeter between harness connector terminals 1 + 3 using jumper wires from VW 1594 adapter kit.
- Switch ignition on.
- specification: 11.5 Volts minimum
- Switch ignition on.
- Connect Test Box VAG 1598/18 to ECM wiring harness.
- Check for open circuit between Test Box and 3-pin harness connector using wiring diagram, connecting as follows
terminal 1 + socket 23
terminal 2 + socket 44
terminal 3 + socket 56
- Wire resistance: 1.5 Ohm maximum
- Check wires for shorting to one another
terminal 3 + socket 44
terminal 3 + socket 23
terminal 2 + socket 23
- specification: infinity Ohm
If wiring OK and voltage present between terminals 1 + 3:
- Replace Camshaft Position sensor - G40-.
If wiring OK and NO voltage between terminals 1 + 3:
- Replace Engine Control Module -J220-
- Perform Basic setting.
- Read-out Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Checking Testing and Inspection
If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Generating Testing and Inspection
