Ignition Lock: Service and Repair
STEERING LOCK HOUSING, REMOVING/INSTALLING
This is an exploded view of the steering wheel and steering column switches. The turn signal switch and the windshield wiper and washer switch are fastened to the top of the steering column housing by three screws. They can be replaced individually if necessary, but individual pants for repairing the switches are not available.
The ignition switch and lock cylinder also mount to the steering column housing, which in turn clamps to the steering column tube. There is no provision for adjusting the height of the steering wheel or the switches on the steering column.
1. Remove the steering wheel.
2. Remove the Phillips-head screws that hold the two halves of the steering column switch cover together, and remove the lower cover.
3. Remove the three screws that hold the turn signal and windshield wiper switch assemblies to the steering column housing. Disconnect the harness connectors from the switches and remove the switches from the steering column.
4. Remove the spacer sleeve by twisting it off of the steering column using channel-lock pliers.
5. Remove the lock washer, the spring, and the horn con- tact ring. Remove the socket head bolt that clamps the steering column housing to the steering column tube.
6. Disconnect the wiring from the ignition switch. Insert the ignition key and unlock the steering. Remove the steering column housing and the ignition/steering lock, together with the upper half of the steering column switch cover.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Drive the spacer sleeve onto the steering column so that the steering wheel clearance is as shown in "Spacer Sleeve" below. Use a new lock washer on the steering column. Torque the socket-head steering column housing clamping bolt to 10 Nm (87 in. lb.). Avoid overtightening the three switch mounting screws.
Spacer Sleeve:
Spacer sleeve (A) installed for correct clearance Drive on sleeve so that dimension a is 41.5 mm (1.63 in) With steering wheel installed, dimension b should be 2 to 4 mm (1/16 to 1/8 in.).
